This prayer is for the moment you wake up after a night that did not give you the rest you needed, or for the morning you want to start by handing God the weariness of the hours before. Pray it first thing, while you are still sitting on the edge of the bed or before the day’s noise fills your head. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Morning Prayer for a Restful Night

Lord, I am awake, and I thank you for this new morning. Last night I may have lain there with my thoughts racing, going over conversations, worrying about money, the children, my health, or the work waiting for me. Some of that weight came with me into sleep, and some of it is still sitting on my chest now. I ask you to take it from me before I pick up my phone or start the coffee. Quiet the part of me that keeps running the same worries in circles.

Father, I ask for a restful night ahead, the next one and every one after it, where my body can truly let go and my mind can settle. Thank you that you do not slumber or sleep, and that you watch over me even when I cannot watch over myself. Help me to trust that I am held. Give me the grace to set down what I cannot fix and to receive the rest you offer. Make today gentle where it can be, and give me patience where it cannot. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I start this day tired and a little anxious. Settle my mind, steady my hands, and help me hear you above the noise. Give me rest tonight as I rest in you now, and help me remember that you are holding everything I am carrying. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let it become your own confession of trust. Pray it as a reminder that safety and sleep come from the Lord, not from getting every detail of the day right.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the pressure of constant striving. Ask God to help you stop working through the night in your mind and to receive rest as a gift he gives to those he loves.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion to Jesus by name as you read this. Pray that he would lift the heaviest parts of your day and give you the rest that only he can provide.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a testimony of waking up in the Lord’s care. Thank him that you have woken again, and ask him to carry you through the coming hours.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Turn anxious thoughts into prayer by praying these words over your worries one at a time. Ask God for the peace that guards the heart and mind when everything else feels unsettled.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer first thing after waking, before you check messages or start the day’s tasks. Sit somewhere quiet, with your feet on the floor and a cup of water or tea in your hands, so your body has something steady to hold while you speak. If your mind keeps drifting to the day ahead, gently bring it back to the phrase you are on and let the rest follow.

A spouse, a friend, or a family member can pray this with you, or read it aloud to someone who is struggling to sleep. Many people find it helpful to pray it again in the early evening, asking God to prepare the night as well. Write the closing line on a card by the bed so the words are waiting for you when you wake.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give rest to the weary heart and quiet to the restless mind. May he go before you into this day and keep watch over you through the night to come. May you wake refreshed in body and steady in spirit, knowing you are deeply loved.
