This morning prayer for endurance is for the moment you wake up already tired of what the day will ask of you. Pray it before your feet hit the floor, in the car, or at the kitchen counter while the coffee brews. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your situation needs them.

Morning Prayer for Endurance

Lord, I am waking up to a day I already feel the weight of. There are conversations I would rather avoid, tasks that have sat undone for too long, and people who will need more from me than I think I have to give. Before I reach for my phone or my to-do list, I want to put my feet down on the floor and say, out loud, that I cannot do this in my own strength. Be the strength I lack. Steady my breathing and steady my thoughts, so that I am not carrying yesterday’s frustration into this morning.

Father, give me the stamina to keep going when the first hour goes well and the fifth hour does not. When I am tempted to quit a task halfway through, or to snap at the people closest to me because I am running on empty, remind me that you see every small effort. Help me take the next step instead of planning the whole week in one breath. Where I am worn thin, fill the gap with your patience, your peace and your nearness. Let me finish what I start, and let me rest when rest is what you are asking of me.

Thank you that I am not the first person to need endurance, and I will not be the last. Hold the people I will meet today, the ones who are tired too, and let me be gentle with them. Go before me into every hour, and walk beside me into every hard moment. I trust you with the parts of today I cannot control. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need endurance for today, and I need it now. Carry me through the next hour, then the one after that. Keep my heart patient and my hands willing. Help me finish well, and remind me that you are with me in every task. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel your energy draining before the day has even started. Ask God to renew your strength in the places where you are most depleted, and to lift you above the fatigue you cannot shake on your own.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Read this as you think about the work that feels slow or unrewarded. Ask for the patience to keep doing good today, trusting that your faithfulness is not wasted even when you cannot see the results yet.

Romans 5:3-4

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope…

(WEB)

Use this passage when a hard situation is still unfolding around you. Pray that God would shape perseverance in you through the difficulty, and that your character would grow stronger rather than bitter as the day goes on.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Turn to this verse when the pressure of the day feels overwhelming. Name the specific fear or pressure you are carrying, and ask God to be your shelter in that exact place before you step out the door.

Hebrews 12:1

Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us…

(WEB)

Pray this as you consider the race set before you today. Ask God to help you lay aside whatever slows you down, whether that is worry, distraction or a habit that drains you, and to keep your eyes on the next step.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer in the first five minutes after you wake, before the news, messages or emails start pulling your attention in different directions. Sitting on the edge of your bed or at a kitchen table with a warm drink in your hands works well, because your body stays still while your mind gets quiet. If you have a planner or a list of the day’s tasks, keep it nearby and let your hands rest on it as you pray, so the prayer is tied to the actual things you will do.

You can also pray this with someone else. A spouse, a roommate, or a friend who texts you each morning can read it aloud or pray it together over the phone. Many people find that saying the words to another person makes them easier to carry through the day. If you are a parent, you might pray it over your children as they head out the door, changing the pronouns to fit them.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord strengthen you for every task this day holds. May he steady your steps when you are tired, and give you grace for the people who need you. May you finish what he has placed before you, and may you rest in the knowledge that he is faithful from the first hour to the last.
