This morning prayer is written for couples who want to start the day with their marriage in mind. Pray it over coffee, in the car, or beside your spouse before either of you leaves the house. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words what is on your heart.

Morning Prayer for Our Marriage

Lord, thank You for this new day and for the gift of the person beside me. Before we rush into emails, school runs, and the list on the fridge, we bring our marriage to You. Keep us patient with each other when we are tired, and quick to listen when we would rather be right. Where we have let small irritations build up over the past weeks, soften our hearts and help us speak honestly and kindly today.

Go before us into the hours ahead. Guard our conversations at work and at home, and keep our words from becoming sharp when stress runs high. Help us remember that we are on the same team. When one of us is discouraged, let the other notice and respond with tenderness. Give us wisdom for the decisions we face together, including money, schedules, and the care of our children or aging parents. Teach us to pray for each other by name, even when we feel distant. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we are Yours before we are each other’s. Fill this marriage with patience, kindness, and steady love today. Help us hear each other well, speak gently, and forgive quickly. Keep us close to You and close to one another as we go into the day ahead. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Pray this as a thank-you for your spouse as your companion. Ask God to help you see the value of working side by side, and to make you someone who lifts your partner up when they stumble.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let each quality become a request. Ask God to make you patient and kind today, especially in the moments when your spouse frustrates you.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Bring to God any resentment you are carrying from earlier this week. Ask for the grace to forgive as Christ has forgiven you, even if the hurt still stings.

Colossians 3:12-14

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. 14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

(WEB)

Pray that compassion, humility, and love would clothe your home today. Ask God to help you choose these qualities over irritation when the day gets busy.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse for the decisions you will face together this week. Ask God to guide your plans and to help you trust His direction rather than your own certainty.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment in your morning, such as while the kettle heats or before you open your phone. Sit or stand somewhere quiet, and if you can, hold your spouse’s hand or rest a hand on their shoulder as you pray. Physical closeness can make the words feel more personal and reminds you both that you are facing the day together.

If your spouse is not a praying person, or if you are apart for work, you can still pray this prayer on your own and keep your spouse’s name in mind. Friends, a small group, or an older couple from church can also pray it for you on the days when your own words feel thin. Let others carry your marriage with you.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this marriage and keep it steady through every hour of this day. May He make your home a place of peace, your words a source of encouragement, and your love a quiet witness to those who see it. Go in the peace of Christ, knowing you are held by the One who made your union.
