This morning prayer is for anyone who wakes up already tired, with the day’s demands stacked up before the coffee is ready. You can pray it first thing, before you check your phone or step out of bed, or whenever the morning feels heavier than it should. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your weariness is more specific.
Morning Prayer for the Weary
Lord, I wake up tired, and I am not ready for this day. My body feels heavy, my mind is already running through the list of tasks, the calls I need to make, the people who will need something from me before lunch. I don’t know how I will get through it all, and some of it I am dreading. Be near to me before I reach for anything else.
Father, I bring you the people I will see today: the ones who are hard to be patient with, the ones I am worried about, and the ones who will ask me for more than I feel I have to give. Give me steady words and a gentle tone. Where I am running on empty, refill me with your strength. Where I have failed yesterday and carry it into today, remind me that your mercies are new this morning. I give you the hours ahead, one at a time.
Help me to rest in you, even while my hands are busy. Let me not measure my worth by how much I finish, and let me not carry burdens that were never mine to hold. Quiet the anxious voice that tells me everything depends on me. Remind me that you are awake and working while I sleep and while I work. Thank you that I can come to you tired and be received. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired before the day has even started. Carry the weight I cannot carry alone this morning. Give me enough strength for the next task, and then the one after that. Keep me gentle with the people I meet, and help me remember that you see me and you are not weary of me. I trust you with this day. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Jesus speaks this invitation to anyone who is worn out and burdened. Pray it slowly at the start of the day, naming the specific weight you are carrying and handing it over to him by name.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
(WEB)
This verse speaks of strength renewed for those who wait on the Lord. Use it when you feel you have nothing left, and ask God to give you what you need for the tasks in front of you rather than the whole week.
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”
(WEB)
God commands the restless to be still and know that he is God. Pray this before the noise of the day begins, letting your breathing slow as you acknowledge that the day does not depend on your control.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
These verses remind us that God’s mercies are new every morning. Read them while you still feel the failures of yesterday, and ask God to give you fresh grace for this morning’s first steps.
Psalm 55:22
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.
(WEB)
David invites us to cast our burden on the Lord and trust him to sustain us. Pray this as you think through the people and problems you will face, placing each one in God’s hands rather than carrying them alone.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying this before you pick up your phone or look at your inbox. Sit on the edge of your bed or at the kitchen table with a cup of something warm, and let your hands rest open in your lap or around the mug. If your mind wanders into tomorrow’s tasks, gently bring it back to the line you are on. Praying slowly is more useful than praying quickly.
You might also pray this with a spouse, a roommate, or a friend who is also starting a heavy week. Read one paragraph each, or take turns praying the names of the people you will see that day. If you are a parent, you could pray it over your children before they leave for school, and let them hear you ask God to give them a good day too.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over his people meet you in this tired morning and give you rest in his presence. May he steady your steps, soften your heart toward the people you meet, and remind you that you do not walk through this day alone. May his peace settle over you before the first task begins.
