This morning prayer is for athletes who want to start the day by placing their training, competition and teammates in God’s hands before the first whistle, the first lap or the first lesson of practice. Pray it when you wake, while you lace your shoes, or on the drive to the field. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Morning Prayers for Athletes
Good morning, Lord. Thank you for this new day and for the body you have given me. Thank you for the strength in my legs and arms, and for the breath in my lungs when I push hard. Help me to treat my body as a gift and not as a tool to prove something. Guard me from injury today, and give me wisdom to rest when rest is needed and to work when the work is good.
Father, I bring you the practice ahead, the drills I dread and the race I have been preparing for. Calm the nerves I feel in my stomach and quiet the voice that tells me I am not enough. Help me compete with honesty and integrity, to respect my opponents and to accept both the wins and the losses as chances to grow. Be near my coaches, my teammates and the officials, and let my words and actions today bring honor to your name. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I start this day in your hands. Steady my mind before I step onto the field, strengthen my body for every effort, and keep me safe from harm. Help me play with heart and humility, and let me encourage the people beside me. Whatever the score or the time, I want to honor you in how I compete today. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
(WEB)
Pray this verse when your legs feel heavy before a long session or a hard race. Ask God to renew your strength in the places you feel empty, and thank him that his strength does not run out the way ours does.
1 Corinthians 9:24
Don’t you know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run like that, that you may win.
(WEB)
Read this as you prepare for competition. Ask God to help you run with focus and discipline, so that your effort today reflects care and purpose rather than only the desire to win.
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
(WEB)
Bring this verse to God when a goal feels out of reach. Ask him to be the source of your endurance and courage, and to remind you that your confidence rests in him rather than in your performance alone.
Colossians 3:23
And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…
(WEB)
Use this verse to shape your attitude in every drill and every game. Ask God to help you work wholeheartedly for him, even in the small tasks nobody will notice or praise.
Psalm 121:1-2
1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
(WEB)
Pray this when you feel anxious about injury, pressure or an uncertain outcome. Lift your eyes to the Lord as you begin the day, and ask him to be your helper through every hour of training and competition.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it at a quiet moment before you leave home, perhaps while you sit on the edge of the bed with your shoes still in your hands. Holding your gear or your water bottle while you speak can help you connect the words to the body you are about to use. If you have a pre-game routine, make this prayer part of it, so that God is included in the warm-up rather than added at the end.
You can also pray it with a teammate, a coach, a parent or a training partner. Agreeing together on one request, such as protection from injury or a calm mind for the first set, gives you someone to check in with later in the day. Consider sharing the prayer with your family before a big tournament so they can keep you in their thoughts as well.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into this day and steady your feet on every surface. May he strengthen your body, guard your heart and give you grace for teammates and opponents alike. May you play with joy, rest with gratitude and finish the day knowing you were held by a faithful God.
