This prayer is for the moment you wake up already tired of what the day is going to ask of you. It is written for morning, before the first call, the first chore, or the first hard conversation, when you need strength to keep going and not only the hope that today will be easier. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the same needs.

Morning Prayers for Endurance

Lord, I am awake, and I already know some of what this day will hold. There are tasks I have not finished and people I will have to face, some of whom are hard to be around. I do not feel ready, and I am asking you to meet me in the gap between how I feel and what I have to do. Give me enough strength for the next hour, not the whole week. Keep my patience from running out before lunch, and steady my hands when they want to give up on the work in front of them.

Be near to the people I will meet today. Soften the hearts of the ones who are difficult, and give me the wisdom to speak honestly without wounding anyone. Where I am weary of carrying someone else’s burden, remind me that I am not carrying it alone, and that you are not tired of us the way we get tired of each other. Let me take the next step, and then the one after that, trusting you to supply what I lack when I reach it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am starting this day and I am already running low. Give me strength for the next task, the next conversation, and the next hour. When I want to quit or snap at someone, bring me back to your steady presence. Keep me faithful in small things today, and let my endurance come from you and not from my own willpower. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your energy feels spent before the day has really begun. Ask God to renew your strength in the specific places you feel drained, and to let you keep moving without burning out by midmorning.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the work that feels slow or unrewarded today. Ask God to keep you from giving up on what you have started, and to trust that the effort is not wasted in his hands.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this passage when yesterday’s failures are weighing on you. Thank God that his mercies are new each morning, and ask him to let that newness reach into the difficulties waiting for you now.

Hebrews 12:1

Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us…

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel the long race of ordinary faithfulness wearing on you. Ask God to help you lay aside whatever slows you down today and to keep your eyes on the next step ahead.

Romans 5:3-4

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope…

(WEB)

Pray this passage for the trials you already expect today. Ask God to use the pressure you face to build something steady in you, and to help you see progress in the hard moments rather than only the struggle.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version while you are still in bed, or sitting on the edge of it with your feet on the floor. Keep a glass of water nearby and take a slow drink as you finish each paragraph. If you have a notebook, write down the one task or person you most dread, and then pray about that specific item before you move on to the rest of the day.

If you share a home, consider praying this together over coffee or breakfast, or ask a friend to pray it with you by phone before work. Sometimes hearing someone else ask for endurance on your behalf is the encouragement that gets you through the first hard hour. Return to the shorter version whenever the day starts to press in again.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord strengthen you for the work in front of you today. May he steady your steps when the day is long, and give you grace for every person you meet. May you find that his faithfulness is enough for the next hour, and for the one after it.
