This morning prayer for forgiveness is for the start of your day, when you are carrying yesterday’s sharp word, a quiet resentment, or a failure you have not yet named to God. Pray it before your phone, your inbox, or your first conversation pulls your attention away. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayers for Forgiveness

Lord, I come to you before the day begins. Last night I went to bed with things still sitting heavy in me. I snapped at someone I love and did not apologize. I told myself a half-truth to avoid an awkward conversation. I let a grudge toward a coworker settle in, and I rehearsed it instead of letting it go. Search me this morning and show me what I have been hiding from myself.

Forgive me for the small failures I have stopped noticing and for the bigger ones I keep trying to explain away. Cleanse my conscience so that I can meet today’s people with a clear heart. Where I have wronged someone, give me the courage to go to them today, not someday. Where someone has wronged me, soften my heart enough to release them to you. Help me to believe that your mercy is larger than my worst moment, and that I can start this day received, not condemned.

Thank you that your forgiveness is not earned by my performance. Let it shape how I treat my family, my coworkers, and the stranger in traffic. Walk with me through the hours ahead, and when I fall short again by noon, let me come back to you quickly instead of hiding. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am sorry for the things I did and said yesterday that hurt others and grieved you. I receive your forgiveness this morning. Make me quick to confess and quick to forgive, and let my first words today be gentle ones. Thank you for making me clean again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

(WEB)

Use this verse as a request for inner renewal. Ask God to create a clean heart in you before you step into the first meeting, phone call, or errand of the day, and let the word “create” remind you that this is his work, not your own.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a simple confession and receiving. Name specifically what you did wrong yesterday, then rest on God’s faithfulness to forgive and cleanse, trusting his character more than your own sense of guilt.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

Let this verse shape how you see yesterday’s failures. Thank God that your sins are removed far from you, and ask him to help you stop carrying what he has already set aside.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these verses over the fresh mercies of the morning. Thank God that his compassion is new each day, and ask him to let that newness shape how you begin the hours ahead.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for the people you need to forgive today. Ask God to help you be kind and tender-hearted toward them, as he has been toward you, even if the feeling does not arrive all at once.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this before you check your phone, while you are still sitting on the edge of the bed or at the kitchen table with your first cup of coffee. Keeping your hands busy can help: hold a Bible, rest your palms open on your lap, or write one honest sentence in a notebook as you finish. If a specific person comes to mind, name them in the prayer and ask God to go before you to them.

If you are praying with a spouse, roommate, or child, take turns reading the sections aloud and let each person name one thing they need forgiveness for and one person they need to release. A friend or small group can also pray this for you by reading the main prayer over you, changing “I” to “you” if that feels more natural.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who forgives completely look upon you today with kindness. May your heart be clean, your conscience be at rest, and your hands be free to serve the people God places in your path. Go into this day forgiven, and let that freedom flow out to everyone you meet.
