This prayer is for the morning of a recovery from surgery, when the day feels long before it has begun and the body is still learning what has been done to it. Pray it when you first wake, while the house is quiet, or at the bedside before the nurses or family arrive. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or let it be a starting point and speak your own words in its place.

Morning Prayers for Recovery From Surgery

Lord, I wake up today aware of the incision, the stiffness and the ache that were not here before. Thank you that the surgery is behind me and that the doctors and nurses who cared for me are still working on my behalf. Help me to notice what is getting better this morning, even if it is only a little, and to trust that healing takes the time it takes.

Be with me through the hours ahead: the first walk down the hall, the medicine schedule, the meal I may not feel like eating, and the moment I need help getting up. Give me patience with my own weakness, and give my family and friends wisdom and steady hands as they help me. Where I feel fear about pain, setbacks or the results still to come, meet me there and settle my heart. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and sore this morning, and I do not have many words. Be near me as I move, rest, and wait for my body to heal. Steady my breathing, ease what hurts, and remind me that I am not doing this alone. Let the people who love me feel your strength through them today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel shaken by pain or uncertainty after surgery. Name God as your refuge in the first minutes of the day, and ask him to be the steady ground under you while your strength returns.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you are discouraged by how slow recovery feels. Ask the Lord to renew your strength one small step at a time, and thank him in advance for the energy you will gain as the weeks go on.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when you feel the wounds of the procedure, in body or in spirit. Ask him to bind up what hurts and to bring comfort to the places that still ache this morning.

Psalm 121:2

My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Pray this as you look ahead to the day and the help you will need. Thank God that your help comes from him, and ask him to guide the hands of those who lift you, adjust your pillows, and bring you water.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when worry about tomorrow’s test, bill, or next appointment starts to crowd your morning. Bring each concern to God in prayer with thanksgiving, and ask for the peace that guards your heart while you rest.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer while you are still lying down, before you reach for your phone or sit up for the first time. Let your hands rest open on the blanket or your lap, and if you are able, place one hand over the area that was operated on as a gentle reminder that God sees that place too. If you can, keep a small notebook by the bed and jot down one thing you are grateful for each morning.

A spouse, parent, child, or friend can pray this with you or read it aloud while you rest. You might also ask a loved one to pray it over you before they leave for work or school, so the words travel with them through their own day. Let the prayer be a conversation you return to, not a test you must pass perfectly.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk with you through every slow step. May he guard your rest, quiet your fears, and give you strength for each small task. May the people around you feel his presence in their care, and may your healing unfold in his good time.
