A night prayer for a new year is a way to bring the day, and the season it marks, to God before you sleep. Pray it on New Year’s Eve, on the first night of January, or on any evening when the calendar feels heavy with what is ahead. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Night Prayer for a New Year

Father, the day is ending, and I bring it to You as it is. Some of it went well, and some of it went badly. I did things I wish I had not done, and I left undone things I meant to do. Thank You for the ordinary gifts of this day: the food on the table, the people who spoke kindly to me, the moments of quiet I did not expect. Forgive me for what I carried in my own strength, and help me set it down now.

As this year turns, I feel the weight of what is coming. I think about money, about the health of the people I love, about work that may change, and about the questions I cannot answer yet. Lord, You already know every one of them. Grant me rest tonight, and let my sleep be sound. Guard my home and the people who sleep under its roof while I sleep. If I wake in the dark with worry, remind me that You do not sleep and that You are awake over my life.

Going into this new year, I ask for a heart that trusts You one day at a time. Teach me to receive tomorrow as a gift and not a threat. Keep me from pretending I am stronger than I am, and keep me from giving up when I feel weak. Whatever this year holds, let me meet it with You beside me. Thank You for the years You have carried me through already. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired, and the new year feels large. Thank You for today. Hold me through the night and keep my family safe under Your care. Quiet the fears that want to keep me awake, and remind me that tomorrow is in Your hands before it is in mine. Give me rest, and wake me with a heart ready to trust You again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you close your eyes, and let it become your own sentence of trust. Tell the Lord that you are choosing to rest in Him tonight, even if the coming year is still unclear to you.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the work you cannot finish tonight. Ask God to give you the rest that He gives to those He loves, and to free you from the habit of thinking everything depends on you.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words as you think back over the past year. Thank God for His mercies that were new each morning, and ask Him to give you fresh mercy for the mornings ahead.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Bring your restless mind to this verse and ask God to keep it fixed on Him. Pray for steady peace, especially in the hours between lying down and falling asleep.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Take the things you are anxious about for the year ahead and name them to God one by one. Ask Him to guard your heart and mind with the peace that goes beyond what you can understand.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last quiet part of the evening, after the dishes are done and the lights are dimmed. Sit on the edge of your bed or in a chair you use only for rest, and keep a pen nearby if you want to write down one worry to hand over to God. Some people find it helps to hold a cup of tea or to rest a hand on their chest as they speak.

You might also pray this prayer with someone else, such as a spouse, a roommate, or a child who is old enough to understand what the new year means. Take turns reading the lines aloud, and let each person add one thing they are grateful for and one thing they are afraid of. Ending the night together in prayer can make the new year feel less like something you face alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps Israel neither slumber nor sleep watch over you through this night and every night of the year ahead. May He give you rest that is deeper than your tiredness, and may you wake to find His mercies waiting for you. Go into the new year held, known, and loved.
