This night prayer for caregivers is for the end of the day, when the last task is finally done and the house is quiet. Pray it at bedtime, in the car before you walk inside, or on the edge of the bed before sleep takes you. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and say in your own words what the day has held.

Night Prayer for Caregivers

Lord, you have seen every hour of today. You saw the medications counted out at the kitchen counter, the meals cut small and coaxed into a mouth, the calls made and the bills sorted, and the moments when the patience ran thin and I had nothing left to give. Thank you that nothing I did or failed to do is hidden from you. Receive the day from my hands now, the good parts and the poor parts, and forgive me where I was short, sharp or simply too tired to be kind.

I release the worry I have carried since morning: the appointment I am dreading, the nights that are getting harder, the question of whether I am doing enough and whether I will be able to keep doing it. Take the weight of tomorrow out of my arms, because I cannot carry it and sleep too. Give me the rest your Word promises to those who come to you weary. Let my body relax, let my mind slow down, and let me stop managing for a few hours.

Watch over the one I care for tonight. Guard their breathing, ease their pain, and let them sleep without fear. Keep watch over my own home and over whoever is sleeping under this roof. Be my strength when I wake, grace for the hours I cannot foresee, and a steady hope that I am not doing this alone. Thank you for the small mercies of this day, for the cup of tea, the one good laugh, and the faithfulness that has held me through it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am spent and I am giving you this day. Forgive what went wrong, and thank you for what went right. Watch over the person I care for while they sleep, and hold me through the night. Give me enough rest to meet the morning with a little more strength than I have now. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly as you lie down, naming the things you still feel you must finish. Ask God to let you rest in the truth that he gives sleep to his beloved, and that the work does not depend on you staying awake.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Caregivers often carry burdens no one else sees. Bring those specific burdens to Jesus by name tonight, and let this invitation be the last thing you hear before you close your eyes.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Read these lines as a prayer for the person in your care. Ask God to keep watch over them, since the one who watches over Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps, and let that truth loosen your own need to stay on guard.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of lying down in peace and sleeping, which can feel impossible in a home full of worry. Pray it as a declaration you are choosing, trusting that safety and rest belong to the Lord.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When tomorrow feels like one more repetition of today, pray this passage for fresh mercy. Ask God to make his morning compassions new for you, even before you have seen how they will arrive.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed point in your evening, such as after the last medication dose, when the lights go down, or once the house settles. Sit somewhere you can be still, with your hands open in your lap or resting on your knees. If you have a moment before bed, rest one hand on the bed frame or the arm of the chair where your loved one sleeps, so your body connects the prayer with the care you have given.

If you share the load with a spouse, adult child, friend, or church member, ask them to pray the prayer over you on a night when you cannot manage your own words. Caregiving can be isolating, so letting someone else speak for you for a few minutes is itself a way of receiving grace.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he hold the one you care for in peace, and may he give you rest that reaches down into your tired body. Let his faithfulness meet you before the morning comes, and let you wake knowing that you were not left alone in the dark.
