This night prayer is for anyone who lies down with a heavy day still on their mind and needs comfort and strength before sleep. It can be prayed in bed, at the kitchen table after the lights go off, or beside a child’s door. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart needs them.
Night Prayer for Comfort and Strength
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. I bring the conversation that went badly, the deadline I did not meet, the worry about money or health that followed me from the car to the kitchen sink. Take the weight of these things from my shoulders now. I do not need to solve them tonight. Help me set them down in your hands and trust that you are already at work in them.
Be my comfort in the quiet. When the house is still and my thoughts start to race, calm my mind the way a parent settles a restless child. Remind me that you have not stepped away from me, even though I cannot see how things will turn out. Let me feel your nearness in the dark. Where I am tired in body, restore me. Where I am weary in spirit, refresh me with the knowledge that you do not grow weary.
Give me strength for tomorrow, not all at once but one morning at a time. Guard my family and the people I love while we sleep. Watch over the ones who are awake right now, the nurses, the drivers, the parents sitting up with a sick child, and the friends who cannot stop crying. Let my rest be real rest. Thank you for this day, for the small kindnesses in it and for the grace that met me in my failures. Into your keeping I give my night, and my life. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and I am carrying too much. Take what I cannot hold tonight. Calm my heart, quiet my thoughts, and give me enough strength for the rest of this night. Watch over the people I love and over me while I sleep. Let me wake to your mercy in the morning. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Read this slowly as you lie down and let it become your own declaration. Name the specific worries you are setting aside, and pray that you would sleep because you trust God to keep watch, not because you have finally resolved everything.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
This verse reminds you that striving late into the night does not earn God’s favor. Pray for the humility to stop working, and ask God to give rest to the ones you love who are also overworked and anxious.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Jesus invites the weary to come to him, not after they have cleaned up their lives but as they are. Bring your exhaustion to him directly, naming each burden, and ask him to give you the rest he offers.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
(WEB)
Pray this verse over your tomorrow as much as your tonight. Ask God to renew your strength for the coming day, especially for the tasks that already feel too heavy to face.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
When the day has been hard, this passage gives you fresh hope that God’s mercies are new each morning. Thank him for faithfulness you can count on even when your own feelings are unreliable.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying this prayer at the end of your day, once the screens are off and the lights are low. Sit on the edge of your bed or lie down with one hand resting on your chest, so your breathing can slow while you speak. If sleep is hard, pray the shorter version first, then return to the longer one slowly.
You can also pray it with someone else. A spouse, a roommate, or a child old enough to join in can say the prayer aloud together, taking turns on each paragraph. If you are the one who cannot sleep, ask a trusted friend to pray with you by phone, and let them carry a few of your concerns until morning.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he calm every worried thought and fill the quiet with his peace. May you wake rested, strengthened, and held, knowing you were never alone in the dark.
