This night prayer for loved ones is written for the end of the day, when you want to hand the people you love into God’s keeping before you close your eyes. You can pray it at bedtime, in the quiet after the lights go out, or on the drive home once the house is settled. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own names and worries in the spaces it leaves open.

Night Prayer for Loved Ones

Lord, the day is ending and I bring the people I love to you. You know the ones who are tired from work and worried about money, the ones lying awake with a sore back or a racing mind, and the ones who had hard news today that they have not yet told anyone. You know their names, and you know the things they have not said out loud. I ask you to be near each of them tonight, in their rooms, on their roads, and in whatever place they are carrying their fear.

Father, let them rest. Quiet the replaying of conversations and the lists that run on for hours. Where a child is afraid of the dark, be the light they can feel. Where a parent is waiting up for a grown son or daughter who is late coming home, keep their hearts from spinning out of control. Where a marriage is strained, soften the words that wound and give both of them the grace to try again in the morning. Protect them from harm while they sleep, and from the lies that visit people in the small hours.

Thank you for the good things from this day, even the small ones: a shared meal, a text that made someone smile, a moment of laughter that surprised us. I entrust my loved ones to you because you never sleep and never lose track of them. Hold them close, guard their going out and their coming in, and let them wake to a new day held in your faithful hands. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I give you the people I love tonight. Give them peace where there has been worry, and rest where there has been restlessness. Keep them safe through the dark hours and remind them that you are awake and watching over them. Bring them home to a good morning, in your time and your way. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and then pray it back to God for each person by name. It turns the act of going to sleep into a statement of trust that the Lord is the one keeping watch over them.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you are worried about someone who is traveling, working a night shift, or simply struggling to fall asleep. Ask God to keep watch over them, because the psalm says he never dozes.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this for the people who are overworked and anxious about providing. Ask God to give them rest, since the psalm reminds us that rest is a gift God gives to those he loves.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God for any loved one whose mind is racing. Pray that their thoughts would settle on him, and that they would find peace as they rest their minds in his steadiness.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for the people carrying anxious cares you cannot fix. Ask that they would bring each worry to God in prayer tonight and receive a peace that guards their hearts and minds.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment each evening, such as when you turn off the kitchen light or when you tuck a child into bed, so the prayer becomes a habit tied to something you already do. Sit somewhere quiet, and if your hands need something to do, hold a photo of the person you are praying for, or rest a hand on the bed or pillow where they sleep. Pray slowly enough that you can picture each face while you speak their name.

If you live with others, invite them to pray it with you, or take turns reading a line each. A spouse, a roommate, or an older child can add a name or a worry you might have missed. You can also send the prayer to a friend who is far away and ask them to pray it at their own bedtime, so that your loved ones are being covered from more than one place.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep your loved ones in the palm of his hand tonight. May he give them rest that reaches deep into their bodies and minds, and guard them from every harm they cannot see. May they wake to find his mercy new again, and may they know they were never alone in the dark.
