This night prayer for our children is written for parents, grandparents and caregivers who want to commit the day and the coming night into God’s hands. Pray it at bedtime, after the last story is read and before the lights go out, or in the quiet once the house has settled. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your children’s needs come to mind.

Night Prayer for Our Children

Lord, the day is ending and we bring our children to you. You saw every hour of it: the rushed breakfast, the squabbles over shoes, the homework that was harder than it looked, the friend who said something unkind, and the small joys that made them laugh out loud. Take all of it from their hands tonight. Where they carried worry they did not know how to set down, lift it from them. Where they felt hurt, comfort them. Where they felt proud or glad, let them rest in that gladness and remember where it came from.

We ask you to watch over them while they sleep. Guard their bodies from sickness and accident, and guard their hearts from fear of the dark or of what tomorrow holds. If they lie awake with thoughts that won’t stop, quiet them. If bad dreams come, be near enough that they wake to a familiar room and a sense of your peace. Keep the people they love safe too, the ones under this roof and the ones far away whom they miss tonight.

Thank you for the gift of them. Thank you for their questions, their stubbornness, their tender hearts, and the ways they are already becoming more themselves. Shape them into people who love you and love their neighbors. Help us as their parents to trust you with the parts of their lives we cannot reach. Give us rest tonight too, so that we can wake ready for what the morning brings. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, our children are in your keeping tonight. Settle their minds, and keep them safe from harm in body and spirit. Let them wake tomorrow knowing they are loved, and let us rest knowing you are awake and watching over them. Thank you for each of them, just as they are. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you tuck your child in or as you lie down yourself. It names the peace that comes from trusting God with the night, and you can speak it over your children by name as a way of handing them to the Lord for sleep.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that rest is a gift from God and not something you have to earn by finishing every task. Pray it over your household, asking God to give your children and yourself sleep that restores rather than merely passes the time.

Psalm 91:4

He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart.

(WEB)

Use this image of God’s protection as you pray for your children’s safety through the night. Picture them held close under his care, and ask him to be their shelter in every hour of darkness they cannot see into.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

When a child’s mind is racing or a parent’s is full of worry, this verse makes a good anchor. Pray that God will keep each child’s thoughts steady on him, and ask the same for your own heart as you close the day.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the worries your children carried today, whether they named them or kept them hidden. Ask God to take those cares from them, and then pray the same for the anxieties you are holding as their parent.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as the moment after the last glass of water and the final goodnight. Sitting on the edge of a bed or standing in a doorway with the hallway light behind you works well. If your child is old enough, invite them to add one thing they are thankful for or one worry they want God to hold, then pray the words above together.

Keep something in your hands while you pray, like a child’s blanket, a small cross, or your own Bible open to a page you return to each night. A spouse, a grandparent or an older child can take turns reading the lines, and a parent far away can join by phone at the same hour. Whoever prays, it is enough to speak honestly to God about the children you love.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless these children and keep them through the night. May his face shine on them, and may they wake in the morning held in his love. May the parents and caregivers who pray for them rest in the same faithfulness.
