This night prayer is for a community you belong to, whether that is a neighborhood, a church, a school, a workplace or a town. It is meant for the last quiet moments of the day, when the lights are going off and the concerns of the people around you are still on your mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for Our Community

Lord, the day is ending, and we bring the people around us to you before we sleep. You know the families who are lying awake worried about money, the parents who are sitting up with a sick child, and the neighbors who are grieving someone they will not see again. You know the teenagers who feel lost, the older people who feel forgotten, and the ones who are lonely even in a crowded room. Be near to each of them tonight.

Watch over our homes, our streets and our schools while we rest. Guard the people who work the night shift, the nurses, the drivers, the officers and the bakers who start before dawn. Give peace to any place where there is fear or conflict, and where people are tempted to turn against one another. Teach us to be kind to those who are hard to love, and to notice when someone near us is struggling. Let our community be a place where people are welcomed and known. Thank you for the good things from this day, for the small kindnesses we saw and the help we were able to give. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, you are awake while we sleep. We ask you to protect our community tonight, our neighbors, our families and those who are hurting in silence. Give rest to the weary, comfort to the grieving and courage to anyone facing a hard morning. Keep us from harm and make us generous people tomorrow. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for the people in your community who cannot sleep tonight. Ask God to grant them the rest that comes from trusting him to keep them safe until morning.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this over the watchmen of your town, the people who stay awake so that others can rest. Thank God that he never grows drowsy, and ask him to keep those on duty alert and protected.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Let this verse remind you that your community does not depend on your anxious effort alone. Pray that people would learn to rest, trusting God with the work and the worry of the day.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this for neighbors who are overwhelmed by news, bills or conflict. Ask God to keep their minds steady and at peace as they rest their trust in him.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring the specific worries of your neighborhood to God in prayer, one by one if you can. Ask that the peace of God would guard hearts and minds across your community tonight.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of the day, after the dishes are done and before you turn off the light. Sitting on the edge of your bed or at the kitchen table works well, and you might keep your hands open in your lap or hold a warm cup of tea. If you live with others, invite someone to pray it with you, taking turns reading a paragraph each.

You might also keep a list of names or places on a note by your bed, so the prayer stays concrete. Consider praying this with a neighbor by phone or over a fence, or bringing it to a small group that meets during the week. Over time, you may find that your attention to the people around you grows, and that your prayers become more specific.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over your community tonight. May he give rest to every weary heart and peace to every troubled home. May the people you love, and the ones you have never met, wake in the morning held by a faithful God. Sleep well.
