This is a night prayer for waiting patiently, written for the end of the day when the wait is still on your mind and sleep is not yet coming. Pray it at bedtime, in bed or at the kitchen table, whenever you need to hand the unfinished waiting over to God before you rest. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words where they fit.

Night Prayer for Waiting Patiently

Lord, the day is ending and the waiting is still here with me. I have checked the phone again, looked at the calendar again, and turned over the same question in my head while the house went quiet. I am tired of waiting for the answer, the test result, the phone call, the change I have been hoping for. Some nights my patience feels thin, and I catch myself rushing ahead of you in my thoughts.

So tonight I set the waiting down in your hands. I do not have to carry every outcome into sleep. Help me rest in the truth that you see the whole road, including the parts I cannot see from where I stand. Quiet my anxious heart, slow my racing mind, and let me trust that the time between now and the answer is not empty. Keep me safe through the night, and give me the grace to wake tomorrow willing to wait a little longer, with hope instead of dread. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am waiting and I am tired of it. Take this unanswered question from me for the night. Steady my breathing and hold me while I rest. Help me believe that you are working even when nothing looks different yet. Give me enough peace to close my eyes, and wake me with a patient heart. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie down. Ask God to still the noise in your mind so that you can stop striving and simply know that he is God over the thing you are waiting on.

Psalm 27:14

Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a word of courage for the night. Ask God to strengthen your heart so that waiting can feel like faithful strength rather than a weight you must bear alone.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Bring the tiredness of waiting to God in this verse. Ask him to renew your strength so that you can rest tonight and face tomorrow’s waiting without giving out.

Lamentations 3:25-26

25 The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

(WEB)

Pray these verses for those long, uncertain seasons. Ask God to make you good to wait on him quietly, trusting his goodness even when the answer has not yet come.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the need to understand everything before you sleep. Ask God to work even the slow and unclear parts of this waiting toward something good in his purposes.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of the day, after the last screen is switched off and before you turn out the light. Choose a quiet spot, such as the edge of your bed, a chair by the window, or the kitchen table after everyone else has gone to sleep. Keep something in your hands while you pray, like a warm cup of tea, a smooth stone, or a folded note with the name of what you are waiting for, so your body has something to hold while your mind lets go.

If the waiting involves someone else, such as a child, a spouse, or a friend, ask a trusted person to pray this prayer with you or for you on the same night. Shared prayer can steady a heart that keeps returning to worry. If you wake in the night with the same thoughts, you can return to the short version and whisper it again until your breathing slows.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over the night keep watch over you tonight. May he calm the waiting heart, quiet the restless mind, and give you rest that the day could not provide. May you wake knowing that the answer is coming in his time, and that you have never waited alone.
