This lesson teaches children that God gave every family of Israel a special place in the camp, and that God knows and cares about each one. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God knows where every family belongs, and he gives each one a place to be. Every person matters to him, whether they are big or small.

Memory Verse

Numbers 2:2

“The children of Israel shall encamp every man by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers’ houses: at a distance from the Tent of Meeting shall they encamp around it.”

(WEB)

Have the children stand in a circle, each placing a hand on their chest for “every man,” then pointing outward to show each family going to its own spot. Repeat the verse together while they move to their places, then sit back down.

The Story: Numbers 2 for Kids

The Israelites had been walking through the desert for a long time. God told Moses and Aaron that the people should set up their tents in a special way. Each family had a flag, called a banner, that showed which tribe they belonged to. God wanted everyone to know exactly where to stand.

The tent where God met with his people sat right in the middle of the camp. All the tribes built their tents around it, in four groups, one on each side. Judah went on the east side, where the sun comes up. Reuben went on the south side, Ephraim on the west, and Dan on the north.

Each tribe had a leader, called a prince. Nahshon led the tribe of Judah, and Elizur led the tribe of Reuben. Each leader helped count the people in his tribe. The Israelites were so many that there were over six hundred thousand men who could fight, and God knew every single one of them.

When it was time to move, God told the people they would travel in order too. Judah went first, then Reuben, then the Tent of Meeting with the Levites in the middle, then Ephraim, and Dan last. Everyone kept their place and followed their banner.

The people did exactly what God asked. The Bible says they camped by their banners and set out by their families, just as the Lord commanded Moses. They trusted God to lead them, and they obeyed him together.

Read It Together

Numbers 2:1-2

1 The LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 2 “The children of Israel shall encamp every man by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers’ houses: at a distance from the Tent of Meeting shall they encamp around it.”

(WEB)

Point out that God spoke to Moses and Aaron before the people moved. God is the one who gave the plan, and the people were told where to go. Ask the children who they think the plan was for.

Numbers 2:17

“Then the Tent of Meeting shall set out, with the camp of the Levites in the middle of the camps. As they encamp, so shall they set out, every man in his place, by their standards.

(WEB)

Show the children that the Tent of Meeting was in the middle of everything. Explain that God’s presence was at the center of the camp, and every tribe stayed close to him.

Numbers 2:34

Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they encamped by their standards, and so they set out, everyone by their families, according to their fathers’ houses.

(WEB)

Point out that the people did what God said, all of them, every family. Ask the children what it looks like to do what God asks us to do at home or at school.

Talk About It

  • What did each family carry so everyone could know where they belonged?
  • Why do you think God put the Tent of Meeting in the middle of the camp?
  • How do you think the people felt knowing God had a plan for each tribe?
  • What is one place in your home or church where you belong and where people count on you?
  • How can you show that you trust God to lead you, like the Israelites did?

Activity Ideas

Paper Banner Craft

You will need paper, markers, crayons, and a craft stick or straw for each child. Have each child draw a simple flag with a symbol that means something to their family, such as a heart, a house, or a tree. Tape the flag to the stick and let them tell the group what their banner shows.

Camp Around the Tent Game

Set a chair or a pillow in the middle of the room to be the Tent of Meeting. Label four corners of the room as east, south, west, and north. Call out a tribe name, and the children run to the correct corner, then return to sit near the middle. Mix in a few quick rounds so the children have fun finding their places.

Family Place Chart at Home

You will need a sheet of paper and some stickers or crayons. Draw a simple map of your home with a circle in the middle for the family table or living room. Ask each family member to draw or place a sticker where they usually sit or play. Talk together about how each person has a special place in the home, just as each tribe had a place in the camp.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God is orderly and deliberate. He gives every family a place, counts every person, and keeps his presence at the center of the community. It also shows that God’s people are called to live together with purpose and unity under his leadership.

Avoid overstating the numbers to children. Some of the counts are very large and hard to picture, and the lesson does not need to explain them in detail. Focus on the truth that God knows and counts each person, rather than on exact totals.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank you for knowing each of us by name. Help us remember that you have a place for every family and every person. Show us where we belong, and help us follow you together. Amen.
