Numbers 24 records the final two oracles of Balaam, the outsider hired to curse Israel, who ends up blessing the people instead and foretelling a future ruler. These questions are for small groups, Sunday classes, and anyone studying the chapter on their own. Each section below comes with a leader’s note so you can guide the discussion without preparing a separate summary.

Numbers 24 at a Glance

Balak, the king of Moab, has already tried twice to have Balaam curse Israel, and both times the words that came out were blessings. In this chapter Balaam stops looking for signs and simply turns toward the wilderness where Israel is camped. The Spirit of God comes on him, and he speaks four poetic oracles: a blessing on Israel’s tents and fruitfulness, a vision of a king who will rise, judgments on Moab, Edom and the surrounding nations, and a closing word about the distant future.

The chapter closes with Balak angry and dismissing Balaam, and with Balaam leaving for home. The arc moves from a hired prophet’s failed plan to a glimpse of God’s plan that reaches far beyond the wilderness generation.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before any discussion of meaning. Ask the group to point to the exact words in the text, and resist explaining until everyone has found what the passage says. Keep answers short and grounded in the verses.

Numbers 24:5

How goodly are your tents, Jacob, and your tents, Israel!

(WEB)

Reading this verse first sets the tone of blessing and gives the group the picture of Israel’s dwellings that the rest of the chapter builds upon. It is a good opening for any discussion of how God sees his people.

Numbers 24:6-7

6 As valleys they are spread out, as gardens by the riverside, as aloes which the LORD has planted, as cedar trees beside the waters. 7 Water shall flow from his buckets. His seed shall be in many waters. His king shall be higher than Agag. His kingdom shall be exalted.

(WEB)

These verses carry the imagery of valleys, gardens, water and flourishing growth. Reading them together helps the group feel the richness of the picture Balaam paints and notice how it contrasts with the threats Balak had hoped for.

Numbers 24:9

He couched, he lay down as a lion, as a lioness; who shall rouse him up? Everyone who blesses you is blessed. Everyone who curses you is cursed.”

(WEB)

This verse contains the principle that blessing and cursing attach to how one treats Israel. Reading it aloud gives the group a chance to reflect on God’s protective commitment to his people and to consider what kind of posture toward others it calls for.

Numbers 24:13

‘If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I can’t go beyond the LORD’s word, to do either good or bad from my own mind. I will say what the LORD says’?

(WEB)

Balaam’s refusal to go beyond the LORD’s word, even for great wealth, is a clear statement of integrity. Hearing it aloud invites the group to reflect on what they would be unwilling to trade away in their own speech and decisions.

Numbers 24:17

I see him, but not now. I see him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob. A scepter will rise out of Israel, and shall strike through the corners of Moab, and break down all the sons of Sheth.

(WEB)

This verse contains the striking promise of a star and a scepter arising from Jacob. Reading it aloud allows the group to hold the chapter’s future-facing hope, which later readers have connected to the coming of Christ.

Memory Verse for Numbers 24

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you grateful that you speak even through unexpected voices and that your purposes stand firm when human plans fall apart. Thank you for the picture of your people flourishing like gardens by the water, and for the assurance that your promises reach far beyond what we can see today. Help us, like Balaam at his best, to speak only what you have said and to refuse the pull of shortcuts, approval, and gain. Give each person here a heart that sets its face toward your word and trusts your faithfulness in the waiting. Bless the people we have named and the people we have not yet had the chance to name. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
