Numbers 34 describes the boundaries of the land God promised to Israel and names the leaders who will divide it among the tribes. These questions are written for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. Each set moves from what the text says, to what it means, to how it shapes daily faithfulness, and leaders can use them in order or pick the ones that fit their time.

Numbers 34 at a Glance

The chapter opens with God speaking to Moses about the borders of Canaan, tracing the southern, western, northern and eastern edges in turn. Each boundary is marked by named places, some of which are hard to locate on a modern map, which itself is worth discussing with a group.

The second half shifts from geography to people. God names Eleazar the priest and Joshua as the officials who will oversee the division, then lists one prince from each tribe to help. The chapter closes by confirming that these are the men the LORD appointed for this task.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask the group to point to the verse that supports each answer, and let the text stay in control of the discussion for a few minutes.

Numbers 34:2

“Command the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you come into the land of Canaan (this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to its borders)…

(WEB)

This verse introduces the whole chapter by calling the land an inheritance. Reading it aloud at the start sets the frame for everything that follows and reminds the group that the land is a promise, not a prize.

Numbers 34:13

Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which the LORD has commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe…

(WEB)

Here Moses states plainly that the land is to be inherited by lot as the LORD commanded. Hearing the command in Moses’ own voice helps the group see the chapter as instruction received and passed on.

Numbers 34:17-18

17 “These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun. 18 You shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land for inheritance.

(WEB)

These verses name the priest and the leader who will oversee the division and call for one prince from every tribe. Reading them aloud highlights the shared responsibility of leadership and the inclusion of every tribe.

Numbers 34:29

These are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance to the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.

(WEB)

The closing verse confirms that these are the men the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance. Ending with this line helps the group recognize that the whole chapter rests on God’s own appointment.

Numbers 34:12

The border shall go down to the Jordan, and end at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its borders around it.’”

(WEB)

This verse brings the eastern border down to the Jordan and the Salt Sea, closing the land on every side. Reading it helps the group feel the completeness of the boundaries God describes.

Memory Verse for Numbers 34

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank You that You are a God who gives inheritance and marks out clear places for Your people. Thank You for the specific ways You keep Your promises, down to the very boundaries of the land. Help us to receive what You assign to us with contentment and not with envy, and to honor the leaders You have placed over us. Show us who in our community is waiting for a voice or a place, and give us courage to make room for them. Teach us to set healthy boundaries that reflect Your care for our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
