This lesson teaches children that God keeps His promises and gives His people a home. Children aged about 5 to 11 can learn it together, and it takes about 20 to 30 minutes with a short activity.
Big Idea
God told His people exactly where their land would be, and He always keeps His word. When God makes a promise, He follows through, even when it takes a long time.
Memory Verse
Numbers 34:13
Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which the LORD has commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe…
(WEB)
Have the children stand tall, then slowly stretch both arms out wide, as if they are measuring a big field. Say “This is the land God promised” each time they stretch. Repeat it three times, growing a little louder each time.
The Story: Numbers 34 for Kids
God’s people, the children of Israel, were almost ready to enter a new country. For many years they had walked through the wilderness, and now they could see the land God had promised them. God spoke to their leader, Moses, and asked him to tell the people something very important.
God described the borders of the land, going around it from the south, to the west, to the north, and then to the east. Moses listened carefully and then passed the message on to the whole nation. It was like God drawing a map for them with His own words.
Next, God told Moses who would help divide the land fairly among the families. Eleazar the priest and Joshua, Moses’ helper, would do this work. God also chose one leader from each tribe to join them, so every family group had someone to speak for it.
The names of those leaders were written down, one after another. Caleb from the tribe of Judah was one of them, and Joshua from another tribe was another. God wanted each tribe to know that its leader had been chosen by Him.
Moses said, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot.” That meant the land would be shared out in a fair way, and God was the One who arranged it. The people did not have to guess where they would live, because God had already told them.
Read It Together
Numbers 34:2
“Command the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you come into the land of Canaan (this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to its borders)…
(WEB)
Point out that God begins by telling the people about the land before they reach it. Ask the children to notice that God planned the land for them ahead of time. He was thinking about His people before they arrived.
Numbers 34:18
You shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land for inheritance.
(WEB)
Show the children that God asked for one leader from each tribe to help. Explain that God wanted everyone included, so that every family had a voice in the work. Point out how careful and fair God is with His people.
Numbers 34:29
These are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance to the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.
(WEB)
Read this last verse slowly and point out the word “commanded.” Explain that God Himself gave these instructions, and His people could trust them completely. Let the children see that God’s plans are always good and always carried out.
Talk About It
- What do you think the people felt when they finally saw the land God had promised?
- Why do you think God told the people exactly where the borders would be?
- Can you think of a promise God has made in the Bible that He kept?
- How does it help you to know that God plans things ahead of time?
- What is one thing you can trust God to do for you this week?
Activity Ideas
Draw the Promised Land Map
You will need a large sheet of paper, crayons or markers, and a ruler if you have one. Ask the children to draw a simple outline of a land, then label the four sides as north, south, east, and west. Let them add a few landmarks like a sea, a mountain, or a river, and talk about how God described each border.
Shepherd and Sheep Borders Game
You will need a rope, string, or a line of tape on the floor. Mark a big square as the land and let the children walk around the border slowly, calling out each side as they reach it. Then have one child be the leader while the others follow the lines carefully, just as God guided His people.
Take-Home Promise Card
You will need index cards, a pencil, and a pen for decorating. Have each child write “God keeps His promises” on one side and draw a small house or tent on the other. Encourage them to show the card to a family member at home and say the memory verse together.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows how carefully God planned the inheritance of His people. Each border and each named leader reflects God’s faithfulness to what He had said to Abraham and his descendants long before. It is a reminder that God’s promises are specific, personal, and dependable across generations.
When teaching children, avoid suggesting that the land was given to these people because they deserved it more than others. The chapter does not teach that, and it can confuse young learners. Keep the focus on God’s faithfulness and His kindness toward His people.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank You for keeping Your promises to us and to all Your people. Help us remember that You plan good things for us, even when we cannot see them yet. Help us trust You every day, and help us tell others how faithful You are. Amen.
