Numbers 36 closes the book with a short but practical case: the daughters of Zelophehad, whose father had no sons, ask how their inheritance in the promised land will be protected. This guide gives you questions and leader’s notes for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. Each set moves from what the text says, to what it means, to how it shapes everyday faithfulness.

Numbers 36 at a Glance

The chapter opens with the leaders of the clan of Gilead, from the family of Manasseh, coming to Moses with a concern about the earlier ruling that gave Zelophehad’s daughters land. Their worry is that if these women marry outside their tribe, their land would pass to another tribe and be lost to their own. Moses responds by directing that the daughters may marry whomever they choose, provided they marry within their father’s tribe, so the inheritance stays where it belongs.

The chapter then records that the daughters obeyed, and it ends by summing up the commandments given to Israel on the plains of Moab. The closing verse ties the whole book of Numbers back to God’s direction given through Moses.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask group members to point to the exact words in the text, and keep the discussion close to what the chapter literally reports.

Numbers 36:1-2

1 The heads of the fathers’ households of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spoke before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers’ households of the children of Israel. 2 They said, “The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel. My lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

Reading the opening verses aloud sets the scene: the leaders come with a real concern, and they bring it directly to Moses and the princes. Invite the group to listen for the words “the LORD commanded,” which frame the whole request.

Numbers 36:5-7

5 Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the LORD’s word, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks right. 6 This is the thing which the LORD does command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them be married to whom they think best; only they shall marry into the family of the tribe of their father. 7 So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel move from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall all keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

These verses contain the core ruling. Reading them aloud helps the group hear the balance between the daughters’ freedom to marry and the requirement that the inheritance remain within the tribe.

Numbers 36:8-9

8 Every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may each possess the inheritance of his fathers. 9 So shall no inheritance move from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of the children of Israel shall each keep his own inheritance.’”

The repetition in these verses stresses that each tribe must keep its own inheritance. Reading them slowly lets the group notice the emphasis on every tribe keeping what God has given it.

Numbers 36:10-12

10 The daughters of Zelophehad did as the LORD commanded Moses: 11 for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to their father’s brothers’ sons. 12 They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph. Their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

This passage records the obedience of the daughters and the outcome for their inheritance. Reading it together brings the story to its resolution and gives the group a chance to reflect on faithful response.

Numbers 36:13

These are the commandments and the ordinances which the LORD commanded by Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

The final verse gathers the chapter and the whole book into one summary. Reading it last helps the group see how a single family matter belongs within God’s larger instruction to his people.

Memory Verse for Numbers 36

Numbers 36:7

So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel move from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall all keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

This verse captures the heart of the chapter: the inheritance of the people is to stay within their own tribes, and each family keeps what God has given. Memorizing it gives you a clear summary of the principle that God cares about faithful stewardship of what he has entrusted to his people.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you that you care about the details of our lives, from the land we are given to the choices we make about our families. Help us to bring our concerns to you with honesty and respect, as the leaders did before Moses. Teach us to walk in the freedom you give while honoring the boundaries of your word. Give us the quiet obedience the daughters of Zelophehad showed, and keep our hearts rooted in your commands. Thank you for the inheritance you have promised us in Christ. Amen.
