Numbers 4 gives the work assigned to the three Levite families (Kohath, Gershon and Merari) in carrying and caring for the tabernacle. These questions suit a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study, and they follow the chapter in order so you can move from observation to meaning to daily life without a separate summary.

Numbers 4 at a Glance

The chapter opens with a census of the Kohathite men aged thirty to fifty, then gives detailed instructions for packing the holiest objects before they are carried. Verses 15 and 20 set the boundary: the Kohathites must carry the holy things but must not touch or look at them directly, or they will die.

The chapter then turns to the Gershonites, who carry the curtains and coverings, and the Merarites, who carry the structural frame. Each family’s task falls under the oversight of Aaron’s sons, and the chapter ends by totaling the men counted for service.

Observation Questions

Use these first to make sure everyone has read the same words before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask the group to point to the verses in the text rather than answer from memory, and keep the answers short and factual.

Numbers 4:15

“When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp moves forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to carry it: but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the Tent of Meeting.

Read this verse to introduce the warning about touching the sanctuary and the phrase “these things are the burden of the sons of Kohath.” It anchors the group’s discussion of holiness and assigned duty.

Numbers 4:19-20

19 But thus do to them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach to the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them everyone to his service and to his burden; 20 but they shall not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die.”

Reading these two verses together shows God’s concern that the Kohathites live rather than die. It is a good way to open a discussion about careful instruction and God’s protective purpose.

Numbers 4:24-27

24 “This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens: 25 they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle, and the Tent of Meeting, its covering, and the covering of sealskin that is above on it, and the screen for the door of the Tent of Meeting, 26 and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and around the altar, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and whatever shall be done with them. They shall serve in there. 27 At the commandment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burden, and in all their service; and you shall appoint their duty to them in all their responsibilities.

These verses describe the Gershonite work with clear, practical detail. Reading them aloud helps the group picture the physical work and the oversight under Ithamar.

Numbers 4:31-33

31 This is the duty of their burden, according to all their service in the Tent of Meeting: the tabernacle’s boards, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, 32 and the pillars of the court around it, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name you shall appoint the instruments of the duty of their burden. 33 This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the Tent of Meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

This passage lists the Merarite duties and their overseer. Reading it allows the group to compare the three families and notice how each had a distinct role in the camp.

Numbers 4:49

According to the commandment of the LORD they were counted by Moses, everyone according to his service, and according to his burden. Thus were they counted by him, as the LORD commanded Moses.

(WEB)

End the reading with this verse, which states that each man was counted according to his service and burden. It is a fitting summary for a session about God knowing and assigning each person’s work.

Memory Verse for Numbers 4

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you that you know each of us by name and give each of us a place to serve. Thank you that holiness is serious and that you lovingly guide us so we can live and not be harmed. Help us carry the responsibilities you have entrusted to us with humility, care and faithfulness. Teach us to prepare our hearts before we come to you, and to trust the leaders you have placed over us. Where we feel unseen, remind us that you count us and value our service. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
