In this lesson, children learn that God chose the Levites to serve in the Tent of Meeting and that He cares for His people through the helpers He sets apart. The lesson is best for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God chooses special helpers for His work, and He takes care of His people through them. Every person who serves God matters to Him.

Memory Verse

Numbers 8:20

Moses, and Aaron, and all the congregation of the children of Israel did so to the Levites. According to all that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so the children of Israel did to them.

Hold your hands out in front of you, palms up, like you are receiving a gift. Then bring them together over your heart. Say the verse slowly with the motion, and have the children copy you until they know it by heart.

The Story: Numbers 8 for Kids

God spoke to Moses and told him to give a message to Aaron. The lamps on the lamp stand were to be lit so they shone in front of it. Aaron lit the lamps just the way God had told Moses. The lamp stand was made of pure gold, hammered by hand into flowers and cups, exactly like the pattern God had shown Moses.

Then God gave Moses a special job. Moses was to take the Levites, a group of families from the people of Israel, and make them clean. They were to be sprinkled with special water, shave their bodies, and wash their clothes. Animals were offered to God as gifts so that the Levites could come close to Him.

God said, “The Levites will be Mine. I have chosen them to serve in the Tent of Meeting.” The people of Israel put their hands on the Levites, showing that these men were now set apart for God’s work. Aaron lifted them up before the Lord as a special gift.

Everyone did exactly what God had said. The Levites washed, took care of their clothes, and went to the Tent of Meeting to help Aaron and his sons. They did their work with care, just as God had told Moses. God gave them a job that let them help the whole nation.

When the Levites got older, God let them rest from the heavy work. They could still help their brothers in the Tent of Meeting, but they did not have to carry the hardest tasks any longer. God cared for them at every age.

Read It Together

Numbers 8:5-7

5 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 6 “Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them. 7 You shall do this to them, to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of cleansing on them, let them shave their whole bodies with a razor, and let them wash their clothes, and cleanse themselves.

Point out that God gave Moses clear instructions about how to get the Levites ready. Show children that God cares about how we come before Him, and that He gives us steps to follow when we want to serve Him.

Numbers 8:14

Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine.

(WEB)

Explain that God says the Levites “shall be mine.” Help children see that belonging to God is a gift and a privilege, and that God wants His people to know they belong to Him.

Numbers 8:19

I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the Tent of Meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel; that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel come near to the sanctuary.”

(WEB)

Point out that the Levites were given to help the people of Israel and to keep them safe from trouble. Show children that serving God is a way of loving and caring for other people too.

Talk About It

  • What do you think it felt like for the Levites to be chosen by God for a special job?
  • Why do you think God wanted the lamp stand to look exactly like the pattern He showed Moses?
  • What are some ways you can help your family or your church, just like the Levites helped the Tent of Meeting?
  • Why do you think God cared about the Levites’ clothes and their bodies being clean?
  • How does it make you feel to know that God cares for you at every age, just like He cared for the Levites?

Activity Ideas

Golden Lamp Stand Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a lamp stand with seven lamps on top, like the one God described. Encourage them to add flowers and cups, and to color it gold. Talk about how each part was made carefully to match God’s plan.

Helper Hands Movement Game

Have the children stand in a line. Call out a helper task, such as “carry the water” or “fold the clothes,” and have everyone act it out. When you call “God chooses,” the children lay their hands gently on a friend’s shoulder, the way the people of Israel laid hands on the Levites. Keep it lively and short.

Take-Home Helper Card

Give each child a paper card and some stickers or crayons. Ask them to write or draw one way they can help at home this week. Encourage them to bring the card back to class and share it. Remind them that God sets His people apart to serve Him, and that helping at home is a way to serve Him too.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God set the Levites apart for service in the Tent of Meeting, and that the cleansing and offerings prepared them to come near to Him. It points forward to the way God makes His people holy and gives each one a place in His work. It also shows God’s care for His people in every stage of life.

Avoid overstating the details of the offerings and the rituals to children. Keep the focus on the big picture: God chooses, prepares, and cares for the people who serve Him. Let the children ask questions about the sacrifices, and answer simply and honestly.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank You for choosing us to belong to You and for giving us good work to do. Help us to serve You and others with care, just as the Levites did. Thank You for taking care of us at every age and in every season. Amen.
