This prayer is for the year ahead, whether you are looking at a calendar full of unknowns, a new job, a move, a diagnosis you are still waiting on, or simply a sense that the months to come feel heavier than the ones behind you. Pray it on the first morning of January, on a birthday, or whenever you sit down to face what is coming. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for the Year Ahead

Lord, I come to you at the beginning of a new year, and I do not know what it will hold. Some of what lies ahead I can see clearly, and some of it is still a fog. I bring you the plans I have made and the ones I am afraid to make. I bring the money that has to stretch, the health of the people I love, the work I am not sure I can keep doing, and the quiet worries I have not yet said out loud to anyone. Thank you that none of it is hidden from you.

Give me wisdom for the decisions that are mine to make, and the humility to ask for counsel when I need it. Where I am tempted to measure the year by what I can control, remind me that you hold the seasons and the days. Steady my heart when the news is hard or the phone rings late. Help me to notice the small mercies that will come, even in months I expect to be difficult, so that I do not walk through them with my eyes closed to your goodness.

Be near to the people I will walk with this year, and let me be a faithful presence to them in return. Keep me honest with myself, gentle with my failures, and quick to come back to you when I wander. Whatever this year brings, let it draw me closer to you rather than farther away. I put the year in your hands, trusting that you have already been ahead of me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this year is larger than I can hold right now. I give you the next twelve months, the days I can plan and the ones I cannot. Give me wisdom for today, strength for what is hard, and a settled trust that you are already in the months ahead. Keep my heart close to you through every season, and help me take the next faithful step. Amen.

Turn this passage into a practice of prayer whenever worry about the year starts to rise. Name each concern before God with thanksgiving, and ask for the peace that guards the heart.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time at the start of the year or the start of your week, when you are not rushing to another task. Sit at your kitchen table with a cup of tea or a notebook, and read the main prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to name the specific worries and hopes it mentions. Writing down the concerns you bring to God can help you return to them later in the year and see how he has answered.

You might also pray this prayer with someone else, such as a spouse, a close friend, or a small group. Invite them to add their own concerns for the year, and close by praying for one another. Some people find it helpful to pray it again at the end of each season, letting the words shape their expectations and their gratitude as time goes on.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every month of this year and walk beside you through each season. May he give wisdom where you lack it, peace where you are anxious, and hope where the road feels long. May you know that you are seen, held, and loved, and may the year become a place where you grow in faith and in gentleness toward others.
