This prayer is for the times when you are hurting, whether the pain is from grief, illness, a broken relationship, disappointment, or a weight you cannot name. Pray it when the words in your head have run out and you need something to say to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own sentences in the same spirit.
Prayer When You Are Hurting
Lord, you see me right now, and you know exactly where it hurts. Some of this pain is loud and some of it is quiet, the kind that shows up at night or in the middle of an ordinary errand. I am tired of carrying it by myself. I do not have the strength to fix what is broken, and some of the hurt is not mine to fix at all. I bring you the ache in my chest, the questions I am afraid to ask out loud, and the people I miss or wish would understand.
Father, be near to me in this. Steady my breathing and quiet the voices that tell me I am alone or that this will never end. Help me rest in the truth that you are not standing at a distance, watching me struggle. Give me enough strength for today, not for the whole future, and show me one small thing I can do with the next hour. Where I need comfort, let me feel it. Where I need courage, give it to me in small, honest doses.
I ask you to hold the people who hurt alongside me, and to meet them in their own pain. Heal what can be healed, and give me patience with what cannot be changed yet. I trust that you are working even when I cannot see it. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am hurting right now and I do not know what to say. You already know. Please be close to me in this moment, steady my heart, and help me take the next breath. Carry what I cannot carry, and remind me that I am not alone. Give me what I need for this hour, and I will trust you with the rest. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and let it name God’s nearness to you in the moment you are hurting. Pray that the Lord would be close to your broken places and not just to the parts of you that look put together.
Psalm 147:3
He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
(WEB)
Bring your wounds to God by name, the way this verse brings them to him. Ask him to bind up what hurts, and be honest that you want to see that healing happen in your own life.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
When you feel weighed down, pray this invitation back to Jesus. Tell him what you are carrying and ask him to give you rest, not only for your body but for the worry that keeps you awake.
2 Corinthians 12:9
He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.
(WEB)
When your strength feels gone, pray this promise as a request for grace. Ask God to show his sufficiency in the exact place where you feel weakest today.
Romans 8:38-39
38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(WEB)
Use this passage to pray against the fear that nothing will ever feel better. Thank God that nothing in your pain can separate you from his love, and ask him to make that love real to you this week.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a quiet place where you can sit, such as a chair by a window, your car before you go into the house, or the edge of your bed before you get up. If your hands feel restless, hold something steady in them, like a mug, a smooth stone, or your own wrist, and let the pressure remind you that you are here. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to let the words settle.
You do not have to pray it alone. Ask a trusted friend, a pastor, or a family member to pray it with you, or to pray it over you while you listen. If speaking feels impossible, read it silently or ask someone else to read it aloud while you rest your eyes and receive it.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who sees your hurt draw near to you and hold you steady. May he give you rest for your weary soul, strength for the hours ahead, and a quiet assurance that you are loved. May his peace guard your heart even on the hard days.
