If you have spent the night staring at the ceiling, turning over worries and listening to the clock, these prayers are written for you. They give you words to bring to God after a sleepless night, whether you are praying at dawn, lying awake in the small hours, or trying to settle into the evening that follows a long, restless day. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers After a Sleepless Night

Father, I am tired in a way that sleep did not fix. My mind kept running through the same things: the conversation I dread, the bills that do not quite add up, the health worry I have not said out loud, the person I cannot stop thinking about. Some of these are small and some feel very large at three in the morning. Tonight I am handing them to you, because I cannot carry them in the dark by myself.

Thank you that you do not sleep and you do not grow tired. You were awake through every hour I lay awake, and you were not anxious about any of it. Quiet my thoughts now. Where I have been replaying old mistakes, remind me that they are already forgiven. Where I have been rehearsing things that have not happened, gently set them down. Give me the rest I need, and let whatever is left of this night be restful, not restless. Keep watch over my family and over the people I love who are awake right now. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am awake again and my heart is racing. You know every thought I am holding right now. I give you the worry at the front of my mind, and I ask for steadiness in its place. Be near me in this quiet room, and let me rest in knowing you are still in charge while I am not. Help me breathe slowly and trust you with the hours ahead. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse names a peace that comes from God rather than from the circumstances around you. When you are lying awake, pray it slowly and let each phrase settle. Ask God to make the sleep you need possible, and thank him that your safety does not depend on your own vigilance.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

The psalmist observes that striving to earn rest by working anxiously does not work. Turn this verse into a prayer of release: admit that you cannot out-think your worries, and ask God to give rest to the one he loves. Let the words loosen your grip on the day.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

This verse invites you to hand your burden over rather than keep carrying it. Pray it by naming the specific weight you are holding, then placing it into the Lord’s hands one item at a time. Ask him to sustain you through the rest of the night.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Here peace is linked to a steady mind fixed on God. When your thoughts keep jumping ahead, use this verse to bring your attention back to him. Pray for a mind that rests in trust, and let each slow breath become a reminder that he is near.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Jesus speaks directly to the weary and promises rest for the soul. Read the passage as an invitation to come to him just as you are, tired and unable to sleep. Pray that his gentle yoke would lighten what you are carrying tonight.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer sitting on the edge of your bed or in a chair in a dim room, not lying flat under the covers where your thoughts can spiral. Keep one hand open on your lap or resting on your chest, a small physical signal that you are releasing what you have been gripping. If you can, pray the words slowly, pausing after each sentence to let the worry come up and then be given over.

If you share a home with someone who is also awake, you might pray the blessing over them quietly, or ask a trusted friend or spouse to pray this with you by phone or in person. Many people find that another voice, even a whispered one, makes the night feel less lonely. When you finally lie down again, you can return to the shorter prayer whenever your mind starts to race.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep watch over you through the rest of this night. May he calm the thoughts that crowd your mind and grant you sleep that refreshes body and spirit. May his peace guard your heart when morning comes, and may you wake knowing you were held through the hours you spent awake.
