This page offers prayers to pray before a new job, whether you are waiting for a first day, nervous about a role you have just accepted, or still wondering how a new position will change your life. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Take your time with it, and feel free to return to it on the morning of your first day.

Prayers Before a New Job

Father, thank you for the work you have placed in front of me. I come to you a little anxious about what this new job will ask of me. I do not yet know the people, the systems, or the expectations that lie ahead, and some nights my mind runs ahead of me with worries about whether I am ready. Steady my thoughts. Help me to remember that you have already gone before me into this place, and that your presence does not depend on my confidence.

Give me a teachable heart in these first weeks. Let me ask good questions without shame, listen more than I speak, and take correction as a gift rather than a judgment on who I am. Where I feel behind, give me patience with myself. Where I feel proud, humble me gently. Help me to treat my new colleagues with kindness, especially the ones who seem busy, distant, or hard to read. Let my work be honest and careful, and let me be the kind of person others find easy to trust.

Lord, I also ask you to care for the people I am leaving behind and the people I am joining. Watch over my family as my schedule shifts and my energy changes. Guard my sleep and my health as I learn new routines. If this job is a good fit, let it bloom slowly and sustainably. If there are things I need to learn or change, show me clearly and give me the courage to act. Whatever comes, let me depend on you more than on my own performance. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am stepping into something new and my heart is racing. Calm me now. Help me remember that you are with me in this room, this commute, and these first conversations. Give me clear thinking, a kind voice, and the humility to ask for help. Let me do good work today, one task at a time, trusting you with the rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage when you feel pulled between what you know and what you cannot yet see. Pray that you would lean on the Lord rather than on your own certainty, and ask him to guide each decision you make in the new role.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you walk into the building, log into a new system, or drive home at the end of a long first week. It reminds you that God watches over your coming and going, not only the moments when you feel strong.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When worry about performance or belonging starts to crowd out your thinking, bring each specific concern to God in prayer. Ask for the peace this passage describes, a calm that can steady your mind even while the job is still unfamiliar.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this before meetings, training sessions, or hard decisions in your first months. Ask God to give you wisdom where you lack it, and to be generous with it, so that you can respond well rather than react out of fear.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this promise when you feel unsure of your footing or your place among new people. Let it remind you that God is near, and that his strength is available to you on the days you feel least capable.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray the main prayer in the early morning, before the day begins and before the first message arrives. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or tea, and keep the page or your notes nearby so you can read it slowly. If you are nervous, try reading one paragraph, pausing to breathe, and then continuing. There is no need to finish all of it in one sitting.

Consider keeping a small notebook in your bag or on your desk. Write down one line from the prayer that stood out to you, and the shorter version can be jotted on an index card for the car or the train. You might also ask a trusted friend, mentor, or family member to pray this with you before your first day, or to pray for you during your first month. Having someone else speak these words over your work can bring a steadiness that is hard to find on your own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every new room and every unfamiliar task. May he give you steady hands, a teachable spirit, and honest words for the people you meet. May he keep your family close, your rest sound, and your heart at peace as you learn this new work. And may you find, in the days ahead, that you are never walking into anything alone.
