Prayers before school are short, honest words asking God to go with a child, a teen, or a parent heading out the door into a day of classes, friendships, tests, and the unknown. You can pray them over breakfast, in the car, at the bus stop, or in the hallway while backpacks are zipped. Each prayer below can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Prayers Before School
Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the gift of another day. Before the bell rings, we ask you to go ahead of us into the classroom, the hallway, and the cafeteria. Calm the racing thoughts about the spelling test and the math homework that is still unfinished. Give a steady heart to the one who feels nervous about meeting new teachers, or about walking into a room where they do not yet know anyone.
Father, we ask for kind words and good choices throughout the day. Where there is teasing, give wisdom about when to speak up and when to walk away. Where there is loneliness, open a door for a friendship. Keep our eyes open to the classmate who looks left out, and soften our hearts toward those who are hard to like. Help us to learn well, to listen carefully, and to be honest when we do not understand something. Let us remember that we are never alone, not on the bus, not at lunch, not in the quiet moments between classes. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, you know what this day holds. Go with me to school. Quiet my worry, give me courage to try, and bring me home safely at the end. Help me be kind to the people I meet and honest in what I do. Thank you that you are already in every room I will enter. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 121:8
The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
(WEB)
Pray this over the whole day, from the front door to the return home. It asks God to watch over every coming and going, including the walk to the car, the ride to school, and the walk back out again.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Use this when a test, a project, or a hard decision feels bigger than the one praying. Ask God to guide the steps, even when the whole path is not yet visible.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Read this slowly when anxiety is rising about grades, friendships, or a new routine. Bring each worry to God in prayer, and receive the peace he gives in return.
Joshua 1:9
Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
(WEB)
Speak this to a child who feels afraid of a new class or a new school. Remind them that courage comes from knowing the Lord is with them wherever they go.
Colossians 3:23
And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…
(WEB)
Pray this for effort in learning and in chores. It asks God to shape the work done at school as work done for him, which makes ordinary tasks meaningful.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying the longer prayer in the minute before you leave the house, while shoes are on and bags are packed. A parent can say the words over a child at the kitchen table, hands resting on the child’s shoulders or holding a cup of breakfast between them. For older students, praying silently while waiting for the bus or sitting in the car works well, and a quick touch of the backpack strap can serve as a reminder to keep praying through the day.
If you are praying for someone else, invite them to add a word of their own at the end. Other family members, a grandparent on the phone, or a friend from church can also pray the same words for the same child on the same morning. Knowing that several people are lifting up one child at once can bring real comfort to a nervous heart.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you through every hallway and classroom today. May he steady your thoughts when they wander, and give you a kind word for someone who needs one. May you come home at the end of the day knowing you were seen, loved, and kept by the one who never leaves your side.
