These prayers are for the season of settling into a new home, whether you have just signed the lease, closed on a house, or carried the last box through the door. Pray them when you first walk into the empty rooms, on the night before a move, or in the quiet of your first evening there. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for a New Home

Lord, thank You for this place. Before we unpacked a single box, we asked You to be here first, and we ask it again now. Be in the front room where we will gather, the kitchen where we will eat, and the bedrooms where we will sleep and wake. Make this house a place of peace for everyone who walks through its doors, including the friends and neighbors we have not yet met.

We are grateful for the walls, the roof, and the ground beneath them, but we also know that a house is not the same as a home. Help us make it a home by how we treat one another here. Guard the rooms from anger and fear. Let laughter echo off these walls as much as the noise of moving does. Show us how to be generous with the people who share our street and our town.

Watch over the comings and goings of our days, the drive to work, the children walking to school, and the late nights when someone cannot sleep. Keep us safe in this new place, and give us wisdom as we learn its routines and rhythms. Whatever we are leaving behind, we trust You to go with us and to make this new beginning a good one. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we give You this new home. Fill it with Your presence and let it be a place of rest and welcome. Protect those who come and go, and make us kind to our neighbors. Help us to settle in with patience and thankfulness, one day at a time. We trust You with every corner of it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that a house is only sturdy when the Lord is the one building it. Pray it over your new home by asking God to be the foundation of every room and every plan made within its walls.

Joshua 24:15

If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

(WEB)

Joshua made a public choice about the household he would lead. Pray this verse as a family or as an individual, renewing your commitment to serve the Lord in the place where you now live.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This promise covers the going out and the coming in, the daily movements that a new address will bring. Pray it over your departures and your returns, trusting God to watch over each one.

Matthew 7:24-25

24 “Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. 25 The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock.

(WEB)

Jesus compares a life built on His teaching to a house built on rock. Pray this passage as you settle in, asking that your new home be built on obedience and trust rather than on what is merely convenient.

Psalm 90:17

Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our hands.

(WEB)

This prayer asks that the work of your hands be established. Pray it over the practical tasks of setting up a home, from hanging curtains to planting a garden, asking God to bless what you build there.

How to Pray This Prayer

The evening of your first night is a natural time to pray the main prayer. Walk slowly through each room as you read, pausing at the doorway of the kitchen, the living room, and each bedroom. If you have children or other people living with you, invite them to stand with you, and let each person add a sentence of their own before you close together.

You might also pray the shorter version each morning as you open the blinds, or whenever you pull into the driveway after a long day. A friend or family member who knows you well can pray the prayer over you as well, and you can return the favor when they move into their own home.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this home and everyone who lives in it. May He keep their going out and their coming in, and may their rest be deep and their welcome warm. May this house become a place where faith grows, friendships form, and the peace of God settles into every room.
