This prayer is for the days before, during and after a family reunion, when relatives who have drifted apart or lived far away come together around one table. You can pray it the morning of the gathering, in the car on the way there, or quietly in a back room once the house is full. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak plainly from your own heart.

Prayers for Family Reunions

Father, thank you for the family you have given us, the people we did not choose but are learning to love. Some of us have been apart for years, and some of us carry hurts that we have not yet spoken. Soften our hearts before we walk through the door. Help us remember what we share instead of what divided us, and give us patience with the aunt who talks too long, the cousin who has changed, and the parent who is growing older. Keep our words kind and our listening careful.

Lord, we ask for a gentle day. Where old wounds need tending, give us the courage to speak with grace and the wisdom to know when to wait. Go before us into the kitchen, the living room and the long walk after dinner. Let the children run and laugh, let the older ones find rest, and let each person feel seen. Whatever this gathering brings, let it show us more of your faithfulness to our family. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we are about to see the people we love, and some of this feels tender. Give us patience, a listening ear and a generous spirit. Help us speak only what builds up, and let us remember that you have brought us here together. Bless each person in this room, the ones we have missed and the ones we are meeting again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 133:1

See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a simple gladness that God delights when brothers and sisters live together in unity. Ask him to make your family’s time together a small picture of that unity, even where full agreement is still far off.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Paul recognizes that peace depends partly on us and partly on others. Pray for the strength to do your own part honestly, and for the grace to release what is beyond your control.

Ephesians 4:2-3

2 With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love; 3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

(WEB)

Use these words to ask for humility, gentleness and patience with one another. Pray that the Spirit would knit your family together in a bond of peace.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Bring any old grievance before God in this prayer. Ask for the willingness to bear with a relative’s faults and to forgive as you have been forgiven.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when the family history feels heavy. Thank God that his mercies are new each morning, and ask that his faithfulness would be the thing everyone remembers from this gathering.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment before the first guests arrive, perhaps in the early morning with a cup of coffee in your hands. Write the names of the people coming on a small card and place it on the table as you pray. If you are the host, you might pray the main prayer over the food while it is still warm, asking God to bless the meal and everyone who will share it.

Others can join you too. Invite a spouse, a sibling or an older relative to read the shorter version aloud before the first hug. Praying together at the start, even for a minute, often softens the room and reminds everyone why they came.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your family and keep each one of you in his care. May he make his face shine on the people you love, and give you peace for the road home. May the memories made today be warm, honest and full of grace.
