This page offers prayers for overcoming temptation, written for the moments when a habit, a desire or a wrong choice feels stronger than your resolve. You can pray the longer prayer below in a quiet time, or read the shorter version when temptation shows up in the middle of your day. Read them exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and put your own words into the gaps.

Prayers for Overcoming Temptation

Father, you already know what pulls at me. You know the late-night screen, the sharp word I want to throw back, the old habit I keep telling myself I can handle alone. I am tired of promising to do better and then doing the same thing again. I do not want to hide from this struggle or pretend it is smaller than it is. I bring it to you honestly.

Give me clarity to see the temptation for what it is before it takes hold. Help me notice the path that leads toward it and the people or places I should avoid. Strengthen my will where it is weak, and when I stumble, do not let shame be the last word. Remind me that you have made a way out, and that you are faithful even when I am not. Keep my heart turned toward what is good, and let my desire for you grow stronger than my desire for what pulls me away. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I feel the pull right now and I need your help. Give me the strength to turn away from this and the wisdom to take the next right step. Show me the way out, and steady my hands and my thoughts. I trust you to hold me up when I cannot hold myself. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Pray this verse when you feel that your struggle is unique or hopeless. Thank God that the temptation you face is common to people, and ask him to show you the way of escape he has already prepared.

James 1:13-15

13 Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death.

Use this passage to pray about the process of temptation, from desire to action. Ask God to expose the early stages in your own life so you can stop the pattern before it grows.

Psalm 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a commitment to store God’s word in your heart. Ask him to bring specific passages to mind at the moment you need them most.

Matthew 26:41

Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

(WEB)

This verse names the tension between a willing spirit and a weak body. Pray it honestly, asking God to strengthen you in the areas where you feel most fragile.

Romans 8:1-2

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death.

(WEB)

Pray this passage when failure has left you feeling condemned. Ask God to lift the weight of guilt so you can return to the fight with freedom rather than despair.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you are less rushed, such as early morning before the day fills up or the quiet minutes before bed. Sit somewhere you can be still, and keep a pen nearby in case a specific thought or pattern comes to mind that you want to name to God. Some people find it helpful to hold something in their hands, like a worn cup or a smooth stone, so the physical act reminds them to keep returning to prayer.

You might also ask a trusted friend, spouse or small group member to pray this with you or for you. Accountability and shared prayer can make it easier to stay honest about where you are struggling. Let them know which temptations you are facing so they can check in with you and pray specifically for those areas over the coming weeks.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord guard your steps and steady your heart when the pull is strong. May he give you courage to turn toward what is good and grace to rise again when you fall. May you know that you are not alone in this struggle, and that God’s faithfulness holds you through every day of the fight.
