This page offers prayers for Sunday school teachers, the volunteers who prepare lessons, learn names, and sit on small chairs week after week to tell children about Jesus. Pray these prayers before a class begins, on the drive to church, or on a quiet evening when you are thinking of a teacher you love. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and add the names and needs you know.
Prayers for Sunday School Teachers
Lord, thank you for the teachers who give up their Sunday mornings to sit with children and tell them about you. Some of them came early this morning to set up tables and find the right crayons, and some of them are still tired from a week that was too long. Be near them in the rush before class. Give them patience when a child will not sit still, and gentleness when a question comes out of nowhere that they cannot answer. Help them trust that a lesson can be simple and still be true.
Father, let them feel your presence in the room even when the room feels chaotic. Quiet their worry about whether anything is sinking in. Remind them that you are the one who grows faith, and that they are planting seeds you will water in ways they may never see. Protect their families while they serve, and give them rest when the day is over. Thank you for their willingness to be used by you. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, bless the teacher about to walk into that classroom. Give them calm hands, a clear voice, and a heart full of love for these children. Let them know they are not doing this alone, and let the children hear your name spoken with kindness today. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
(WEB)
Pray this for the teacher’s long view. Ask God to help them keep faithful to the teaching of each child, trusting that what is planted early often takes root later in life.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7
6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.
(WEB)
Pray this for the teacher’s daily conversations with the children. Ask God to make every talk about him a natural part of ordinary moments, in the room and beyond it.
Galatians 6:9
Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.
(WEB)
Pray this when the teacher feels weary of showing up week after week. Ask God to renew their strength and remind them that faithful service has a harvest in its season.
Colossians 3:23
And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…
(WEB)
Pray this over the teacher’s preparation and effort. Ask God to let them do each lesson, craft, and conversation as service offered to the Lord, not only to the class.
1 Corinthians 3:6
I planted. Apollos watered. But God gave the increase.
(WEB)
Pray this for the teacher who fears their work is too small to matter. Ask God to remind them that the growth belongs to him, and that their part is faithful planting and watering.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many teachers find it helpful to pray the longer prayer on the drive to church or in the parking lot before going inside, when the car is quiet and the day has not yet begun. Keep a short list of the children’s names in your phone or on a card, and pray for each one by name while you read. Holding a cup of coffee or a teacher’s bag in your hands can help you stay present.
If you are praying for a teacher you know, ask a friend or a parent in the class to pray the same prayer with you during the week. A short text afterward saying “I prayed for your class today” can mean more than you expect. Pray it again on the evenings before a particularly hard lesson or a difficult season for the family.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before every teacher who serves the children in his name, steady their hands and open their hearts. May the children they love know that they are cherished by God, and may the teacher rest in the truth that the Lord himself is faithful to finish what he has begun in each of them.
