When you are hurting, words can be hard to find, and sometimes the only prayer you can manage is a sigh. This page offers a full prayer you can read aloud as written, a shorter version for a moment when you have little strength, and a handful of Scripture passages to pray alongside. Pray it in the morning when the ache is heavy, at night when sleep will not come, or whenever the pain rises up without warning. You are welcome to use these words as they are or to let them become a starting point for your own.

Prayers When You Are Hurting

Lord, you see me in this place of pain. You know the ache I carry in my body and the weight I carry in my heart. You know the sleepless hours, the news I did not want to hear, the relationship that has gone quiet, and the fear that I will not get through this. I do not need to dress it up before you. I bring you the hurt just as it is, and I ask you to meet me in it.

Be near to me when the tears come without warning. Steady my breathing when my chest feels tight. Help me to believe that my pain does not make me far from you. Where I am tempted to think no one understands, remind me that you do. Show me one small thing I can do today, a glass of water, a short walk, a message to a friend, and give me enough strength to take that step. Keep me from pretending I am fine when I am not.

I ask for healing where I can receive it, for comfort where healing is slow, and for patience with myself as I grieve what has been lost. Hold my worries about tomorrow and help me rest in what is true today. Remind me that you are not surprised by this hurt and that you have not left me to face it alone. Thank you for staying close. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am hurting right now and I do not have much to say. You already know what is wrong. Be close to me in this moment. Breathe your peace into my tired heart and steady me for the next hour. Help me take one honest breath at a time, and let me feel that I am held by you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel crushed or emotionally bruised. Ask God to draw near to you in the exact place where your heart is breaking, trusting that nearness is his nature toward those who hurt.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Use this verse to bring your wounds, both visible and hidden, before God. Ask him to bind up what is broken in you and to tend to the places that still ache.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

When you are weary from carrying pain, pray this invitation back to Jesus. Name the specific burden you are tired of carrying and ask him to give you rest for your soul.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

In seasons when you feel too weak to go on, pray these words as a request for grace. Ask God to let his strength be seen in your weakness rather than waiting until you feel stronger.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Turn to this passage when fear of the future joins your pain. Pray that nothing in your present suffering will separate you from God’s love, and thank him for that steady promise.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet place where you will not be interrupted, even if it is only the edge of your bed or a parked car for five minutes. Sit or kneel in whatever position your body can manage. If your hands need something to do, hold a cup of tea, a smooth stone, or your Bible open to a psalm. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to notice what is stirring in you and whether any line feels especially true or especially hard.

You do not have to finish the whole prayer in one sitting. Many people pray the shorter version several times through a difficult day. If you find you cannot pray at all, ask a trusted friend, pastor, or family member to pray these words over you or with you. Sometimes hearing someone else speak to God on your behalf is exactly the comfort you need.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord come close to you in your pain and carry what you cannot carry alone. May you feel his gentle presence in the quiet hours and receive strength for each day as it comes. May you be comforted, steadied, and held, now and for all the days ahead.
