When you are waiting, whether for test results, a job decision, a child to come home, or an answer you cannot yet see, the waiting itself can feel heavier than the thing you are waiting for. These prayers give you words for those moments. Pray the main prayer as written, read the shorter version when you only have a minute, or use them as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart needs to go.

Prayers When You Are Waiting

Lord, you see me in this place of not knowing. The phone has not rung, the letter has not come, and the hours seem to stretch out with nothing to fill them. My mind keeps running ahead to every bad outcome I can imagine, and my body feels tight with the strain of holding everything at once. I confess that I want control, and I want it now. Please meet me in the stillness and quiet my racing thoughts.

Help me to rest in who you are while I wait. Remind me that you are not surprised by this delay and that nothing about my situation is hidden from you. When I am tempted to fill the empty space with worry, teach me to bring each fear to you as it comes. Give me patience for the slow hours, and give me the grace to be honest with you about how weary I am. Let my waiting become a place where I learn to trust you more deeply.

Whatever comes at the end of this wait, I ask that you would walk with me through it. Give me strength for the outcome I hope for and courage for the one I dread. Keep my heart soft toward the people around me, and help me to notice the small mercies you place along the way. I trust that you are good and that you are at work even when I cannot see it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am waiting, and I am tired of not knowing. Calm my anxious heart right now. Remind me that you are with me in this uncertainty and that you hold the outcome in your hands. Give me enough peace for this moment, and then enough for the next one. I give you the hours ahead, one at a time. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

When you are waiting, this verse invites you to stop striving for a moment and simply recognize who God is. Pray it slowly, letting each phrase settle before you move on, and ask him to quiet the noise in your mind so you can know he is in control.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Waiting can drain your strength faster than any task. Pray this promise over your tired body and spirit, asking the Lord to renew what is worn down so you can keep going one day at a time.

Psalm 27:14

Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

This verse speaks directly to the act of waiting itself. Pray it as a request for courage, asking God to make your heart strong while you wait for his timing.

Romans 8:25

But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.

(WEB)

Paul connects hope with patience in this passage. Pray it by bringing your hope for the outcome to God and asking him to help you endure the wait with steady, expectant faith.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When anxiety rises during a long wait, this passage shows you what to do with it. Pray these words by naming each worry to God in turn and asking for the peace that guards your heart and mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment in your day to pray this, such as first thing in the morning before your phone fills with news, or in the evening when the day’s waiting feels most heavy. If you are sitting in a car, a waiting room, or at a kitchen table, you can pray quietly with your hands resting open in your lap or wrapped around a cup of tea. Some people find it helps to write the prayer on a card and keep it in a pocket or wallet to pull out whenever the wait becomes hard.

You do not have to pray this alone. Ask a trusted friend, family member, or small group to pray it with you or for you, especially on the days when your own words run out. Let them know what you are waiting for so they can pray specifically. Sharing the wait with others can remind you that you are carried by more than your own strength.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows every hour of this wait steady your heart and keep your mind at rest. May he give you strength for each day, grace for each conversation, and hope that does not depend on how things turn out. May he make your waiting a place where you find him near.
