These prayers are for the moments when anger rises faster than you can manage it, whether it is aimed at a person, a situation, or yourself. Pray them when you are alone in the car, when you have just hung up the phone, or when you lie awake replaying what was said. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and put your own words where yours belong.

Prayers When You Feel Angry

Lord, I am angry, and I do not want to hide it from you. The heat in my chest is real, and so is the story I keep telling myself about what was done to me or what should have happened. I feel the pull to say things I will regret and to keep score until I am proven right. Show me what is underneath this anger: the hurt, the fear of being overlooked, the sense that something is unfair. Help me see it clearly without letting it take the wheel.

Slow my breathing and quiet the words racing through my mind. Keep my mouth shut when I would only wound, and keep my hands from doing what I cannot undo. Where I am right, give me the patience to speak about it calmly. Where I am wrong, give me the humility to say so. I give you the people I am angry with, and I ask you to deal with their hearts as only you can. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am angry right now, and I need you. Settle my heart before I speak or act. Show me what is true and what is only my hurt talking. Guard my words and my hands, and let me bring this to you before I bring it to anyone else. Give me enough calm to take the next right step. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:19-20

19 So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.

(WEB)

Pray this when your temper is short and you want to answer quickly. Ask God to make you slow to speak and slow to react, and to remind you that anger rarely produces the righteousness you are hoping for.

Ephesians 4:26-27

26 “Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 and don’t give place to the devil.

(WEB)

Use this when you are tempted to nurse anger through the night. Ask for the wisdom to deal with what is making you angry before the sun goes down, so that resentment does not gain a foothold in your life.

Psalm 37:8

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Don’t fret, it leads only to evildoing.

(WEB)

Pray this when the urge to lash out is strong. Ask God to help you let go of the heat of the moment, trusting that he sees what is happening and that you do not have to fix it in your own strength.

Proverbs 15:1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

(WEB)

Bring this verse into a tense conversation or an argument you can feel building. Ask for a gentle tone and a steady voice, so that your words lower the temperature instead of raising it.

Romans 12:19

Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel the need to get even or to make someone pay. Ask God to take the role of judge out of your hands and to help you release the desire for revenge into his care.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the main prayer at the point in your day when anger tends to surface, such as the drive home from work, the minutes after the children go to bed, or the first hour after a difficult message. If your body is wound tight, do something with your hands first: take a walk, wash the dishes, or press your feet into the floor and breathe out slowly. Then read the prayer aloud, even in a whisper, because hearing your own voice can help slow the racing thoughts.

If you cannot find words, ask someone you trust to pray with you or to pray the shorter version over you. Speaking anger to a friend, pastor, or spouse, and then bringing it to God together, can keep it from turning into bitterness. Return to this prayer as often as you need. Anger that is brought to God again and again usually softens over time.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord meet this anger with patience and make room in your heart for peace. May he steady your breath, guard your words, and show you the way forward that honors him. May you rest in the knowledge that you are seen, heard, and held, and that the one who is righteous and just is never far from you.
