Proverbs 5:21 teaches that God sees everything a person does and watches the whole course of their life, not just the moments others notice. The verse is part of a father’s counsel to his son, a warning about sexual temptation and the way secret choices shape a life. It is traditionally attributed to Solomon, the king associated with the book of Proverbs, and it is addressed to a young man learning to live wisely.

For the ways of man are before the LORD’s eyes. He examines all his paths.

What Proverbs 5:21 Means

The phrase “the ways of man” refers to a person’s conduct and direction in life, the habits and choices that together make up a path. The verse says these ways stand “before the LORD’s eyes,” meaning they are fully visible to God and lie open before him. “He examines all his paths” adds that God does not merely glance at a life. He weighs it carefully, the way a person might inspect a road step by step.

What the verse does not promise is that every wrong will be punished immediately or that people will always be found out by others. Its point is about God’s knowledge and judgment. It tells the reader that private decisions are not private from him, and that a life is measured by its whole direction, not only by its visible results.

The Context of Proverbs 5:21

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings meant to form character and teach people how to live well before God. Its opening chapters frame it as instruction from a parent to a child, and chapter 5 applies that instruction to a specific danger. The audience is a young man who might be drawn toward an adulterous relationship, and the surrounding verses contrast the joy of faithfulness within marriage with the ruin that follows from giving in to temptation.

Just before verse 21, the father urges his son to find delight in his own wife and to be satisfied in love within that bond. Just after it, verses 22 and 23 say that the wicked are trapped by their own sins and that folly leads to death. Read in that setting, verse 21 is not a general remark about divine observation. It is the reason the son should guard his heart: the choices he makes in secret are already known to the One who will judge them.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 5:21

Proverbs 4:26

Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established.

(WEB)

This verse urges the reader to make level paths for their feet, which pairs naturally with the idea of God examining one’s paths. Both teach that careful attention to the direction of one’s steps matters before God.

Hebrews 4:13

There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.

(WEB)

This passage says that nothing in creation is hidden from God and that all things are open before him. It expands the truth of Proverbs 5:21 to the whole of life and to the accountability every person faces.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:21

Lord, you see every road I walk, including the ones no one else will ever notice. I confess that I have sometimes hoped my hidden choices would stay hidden. Help me to live openly before you, choosing faithfulness in the places where only you can see. Examine my heart and my paths, and lead me in the way that is everlasting. Amen.
