This lesson teaches children that wisdom is a real gift from God that is worth listening for, and that it leads to life. It suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, questions and one activity.

Big Idea

God’s wisdom is like a helpful friend calling us to come and listen. When we listen to God and follow what He says, we find life and blessing.

Memory Verse

Proverbs 8:11

For wisdom is better than rubies. All the things that may be desired can’t be compared to it.

(WEB)

Teach the verse in short phrases. For “wisdom is better than rubies,” hold up two fingers together, then open them wide, showing that wisdom is worth more than anything shiny. Say the verse aloud three times with the motion each time.

The Story: Proverbs 8 for Kids

Once upon a time, there was a voice calling out in the busiest part of the city. It was Wisdom, and she stood high on the hills where the roads came together. She stood beside the city gates, where everyone walked in and out. She called out loudly so everyone could hear her.

Wisdom called to the people, and she said, “You simple ones, come and learn! You foolish ones, open your hearts to understanding!” She wanted everyone to know that she had good and true things to share. Nothing she said was crooked or mixed up. Everything she said was clear and right.

Wisdom said that she was more valuable than silver and gold. Wisdom said that the good things people want in life cannot be compared to her. She said, “Those who seek me diligently will find me.” Wisdom wanted people to look for her and to learn from her.

Then Wisdom told the people something very special. She said that she was with God from the very beginning, even before the mountains, the seas, and the earth were made. She was there when God set the heavens in their place and marked out the foundations of the earth. Wisdom said she was like a helper by God’s side, and she was always filled with joy.

Wisdom ended her call with a loving invitation. She said, “Listen to me, my children, for blessed are those who keep my ways.” She told them that whoever finds her finds life and gains favor from the LORD. Those who turn away from her, she said, are hurting themselves.

Read It Together

Proverbs 8:6

Hear, for I will speak excellent things. The opening of my lips is for right things.

(WEB)

Point out that wisdom says she will speak excellent things. Ask the children how it feels to be invited to listen to something good. Explain that God’s words are always true and good to hear.

Proverbs 8:17

I love those who love me. Those who seek me diligently will find me.

(WEB)

Show the children that wisdom says she loves those who love her and that those who seek her will find her. Talk about how seeking means looking for something with all your heart, like looking for a lost toy until you find it.

Proverbs 8:35

For whoever finds me, finds life, and will obtain favor from the LORD.

(WEB)

Point out that whoever finds wisdom finds life and favor from the LORD. Explain that finding wisdom is not like hiding a treasure, but like listening to a friend who wants to help us grow strong and good.

Talk About It

  • What do you think it would sound like if wisdom was calling out to you in the street?
  • Why do you think wisdom says it is better than gold or silver?
  • What is one way you can listen to God’s words this week?
  • How can you tell when someone is giving you good advice that is helpful?
  • What does it mean to seek something, and how can you seek God?

Activity Ideas

Wisdom’s Call Poster

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and tape. Ask each child to draw a picture of wisdom standing at a city gate calling out to people. They can add speech bubbles with words like “Come and listen!” Hang the posters around the room as a reminder that God’s wisdom is always calling us.

Listen and Find It Game

Hide a small object, such as a toy or a sticker, somewhere in the room. Have one child close their eyes while the others call out “Over here!” or “You’re getting closer!” Explain that just as the children followed the voices to find the object, we find wisdom by listening carefully to God.

Wisdom Treasure at Home

You will need an index card and a pencil. Ask each child to write or draw one wise thing they learned today on the card, then take it home. Encourage them to read it to a family member at dinner. This helps the lesson continue after class and gives the family a chance to talk about listening to God together.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this passage presents wisdom as a personal figure who calls out to humanity, speaks truth, and was present with God at creation. Christians have historically read this chapter as pointing toward Christ, the wisdom of God, while also teaching that wisdom is found by seeking God and walking in His ways.

Avoid overstating to children that wisdom guarantees riches or an easy life. The passage speaks of blessing and favor, but the focus is on knowing God and living rightly, not on a formula that produces wealth.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank you for calling us to listen to your wisdom. Help us hear your voice, seek you with all our hearts, and find the life you have for us. Help us to choose your ways every day. Amen.
