In this Psalm 125 Sunday school lesson, children learn one simple truth they can repeat: God keeps His people safe, just as the mountains keep Jerusalem safe. This lesson is designed for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God is like a strong mountain around us. When we trust Him, He stays close and keeps us safe, today and always, even when things feel shaky.

Memory Verse

Psalm 125:2

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people from this time forward and forever more.

(WEB)

Have children stand up and hold their arms out wide like a big mountain. As they say the verse, have them slowly circle their arms around themselves, showing how God surrounds His people.

The Story: Psalm 125 for Kids

Long ago, God’s people lived in a city called Jerusalem. It sat high up in the hills, and tall mountains rose all around it. The people often felt worried, because they knew that enemies sometimes came to hurt them and take their land.

The writer of this psalm looked at those mountains and saw a picture of God’s care. He said that people who trust the LORD are like Mount Zion, a mountain that cannot be moved. It stays strong and steady, year after year, no matter what the weather does.

Then the writer reminded everyone that God surrounds His people, just like the hills surround the city. God’s protection is around them every day and forever. Enemies might try to push and shove, but they could not stay in the place God had given to His good people.

The psalm also talks about people who choose crooked and sneaky ways instead of following God. God is fair and wise, and He knows what each person chooses. The writer prayed that God would do good to those who love Him, and that the people of Israel would have peace.

Read It Together

Psalm 125:1

Those who trust in the LORD are as Mount Zion, which can’t be moved, but remains forever.

(WEB)

Point out the picture of Mount Zion. Ask children what it means to trust someone, and show how a mountain stays still and strong. Explain that trusting God means we can stand firm even when we feel small.

Psalm 125:3

For the scepter of wickedness won’t remain over the allotment of the righteous; so that the righteous won’t use their hands to do evil.

(WEB)

Explain that the psalm says wrong things will not rule over God’s people forever. Help children see that God protects the good and right choices we make, and that we can choose kindness and honesty each day.

Psalm 125:4

Do good, the LORD, to those who are good, to those who are upright in their hearts.

(WEB)

Point out that God does good to people who are good in their hearts. Talk about how God looks at what is inside us, and how He loves to bless those who try to follow Him with a sincere heart.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing that feels as strong and steady as a mountain to you?
  • How can you show God that you trust Him when you feel scared?
  • Why do you think the mountains around Jerusalem are a good picture of God?
  • What is one good choice you could make this week to follow God?
  • How did the people in the story feel safe, and how can you feel safe too?

Activity Ideas

Mountain Collage Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and glue or tape. Have children draw a tall mountain shape in the middle of the paper. Around it, they can draw or paste small pictures of things that show God’s care, such as family, friends, and sunshine. Talk together about how God surrounds us like the hills surround the city.

Mountain Freeze Game

Clear some space in the room and call it the mountain. Choose one child to be the enemy who tries to get into the middle. The other children link arms in a big circle, moving around like a mountain ring. When the enemy tries to break in, the children stand firm and say the memory verse together. Switch roles so everyone has a turn.

Trust Bracelet Take-Home

You will need pipe cleaners and colored beads. Each child threads beads onto a pipe cleaner while you talk about how trusting God is like a strong, steady mountain. Ask them to tell a family member the big idea of this lesson at home. Wearing the bracelet all week reminds them that God stays close.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this psalm teaches that those who trust the LORD are secure, not because they are perfect, but because God Himself surrounds and protects His people. The steadiness of the mountains pictures the faithfulness of God. It also reminds us that God judges wickedness and rewards those who walk uprightly before Him.

With children, avoid suggesting that God always protects us from every physical harm or hard circumstance. The psalm speaks of God’s lasting security and His care for His people, and children should hear that God’s presence is with them even in difficult times.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You that You are strong like a mountain around us. Help us trust You every day and choose what is good. Keep us close to You, now and always. Amen.
