Psalm 17 teaches children that they can pray to God honestly and trust Him to keep them safe, even when people around them are unkind. This lesson suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
God hears our prayers, and He keeps us safe like the apple of His eye. When we feel scared or treated badly, we can run to Him and trust Him to take care of us.
Memory Verse
Psalm 17:8
Keep me as the apple of your eye. Hide me under the shadow of your wings…
(WEB)
Put your hands over your eyes like a little shield, then open them wide as you say “apple of your eye.” Then cross your arms gently over your heart, as if a loving wing is wrapped around you.
The Story: Psalm 17 for Kids
King David wrote this prayer while he was in trouble. People who wanted to hurt him were chasing him and surrounding him. He had done what was right, and he knew it. So he came to God and said, “Hear my prayer, Lord, because I speak the truth.”
David told God that he had tried hard to follow God’s paths. His feet had not slipped away from them. He had kept his mouth from saying unkind things and kept himself away from people who were cruel and violent. David was honest with God about everything.
Then David felt afraid. His enemies were like a hungry lion waiting in hiding, ready to pounce. They were proud and cruel, and they wanted to knock David down. David did not pretend he was not scared. He asked God to stand up and protect him.
David prayed, “Keep me as the apple of your eye. Hide me under the shadow of your wings.” He asked God to guard him closely, like a mother bird who spreads her wings over her chicks. David trusted that God would keep him safe.
At the end of his prayer, David said he would see God’s face one day in righteousness. He knew that God would give him everything he truly needed. David felt calm because he had God’s love and protection, and that was enough.
Read It Together
Psalm 17:6
I have called on you, for you will answer me, God. Turn your ear to me. Hear my speech.
(WEB)
Point out that David says God will answer him. Ask the children what it feels like when someone listens to them carefully. Remind them that God always listens when they pray.
Psalm 17:7
Show your marvelous loving kindness, you who save those who take refuge by your right hand from their enemies.
(WEB)
Show the children that God’s kindness is “marvelous,” which means wonderful and amazing. Talk about one way they have seen God be kind to them this week.
Psalm 17:15
As for me, I shall see your face in righteousness. I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with seeing your form.
(WEB)
Explain that David looks forward to seeing God’s face in the best way possible. Help the children understand that God’s love is something to look forward to, both now and forever.
Talk About It
- What is one thing that makes you feel scared, and what can you say to God about it?
- Why do you think David says God is like a mother bird with wings?
- How did David try to live in a way that pleased God, even when others were unkind?
- What does it mean that God keeps us as the apple of His eye?
- Who is someone you can ask to pray with you when you feel afraid?
Activity Ideas
Paper Bird with Wings
You will need construction paper, crayons, scissors, and glue. Have each child trace their hand on the paper and cut it out to make wings. Glue the wings onto a folded paper bird, then draw a little face on it. As they work, remind them that God covers them with His wings.
Shadow Shelter Game
Gather the children in an open space and have them spread their arms like wings. Call out “Shelter!” and have them run into a safe circle formed by the teacher, pretending it is God’s shadow. Play a few rounds, then talk about how God is always a safe place to run.
Prayer Card for Home
You will need index cards, markers, and a hole punch with string. Have each child write or draw one thing they want to pray to God about this week. Punch a hole in the corner, tie on the string, and let them hang it on their bedroom door or by their bed as a reminder to pray each night.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Psalm 17 shows that honest prayer is welcome before God, even when we feel threatened or are facing people who oppose us. David grounds his request in his own integrity while asking God for protection and justice. The psalm reminds us that God’s care is both a refuge now and a hope for the future.
Be careful not to promise children that God will always remove every danger or enemy from their lives. Instead, emphasize that God hears them and stays close, which is what David experienced even when his situation remained difficult.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for hearing us when we pray. Help us to trust You when we feel scared, and keep us safe under the shadow of Your wings. Teach us to be honest with You and to love You every day. Amen.
