Psalm 18:22 is David’s statement that he kept God’s laws in view and did not turn away from them. He is describing his own faithfulness, the way a person who keeps a map nearby never loses the road. David wrote this psalm as a king who had survived years of pursuit by enemies and by Saul, and he looks back on those years and gives God the credit for his deliverance.

For all his ordinances were before me. I didn’t put away his statutes from me.

What Psalm 18:22 Means

The verse begins with “all his ordinances were before me.” The word “ordinances” refers to the decisions and judgments God has made known about how people should live. David says these were always in front of him, meaning he kept them as a constant reference point rather than an occasional thought. He did not treat God’s instructions as a suggestion to check when convenient.

The second sentence, “I didn’t put away his statutes from me,” uses similar language from a different angle. “Statutes” are God’s fixed commands. David says he did not push them aside or set them down out of reach. Together the two lines describe steady, deliberate obedience.

The verse does not claim that David was sinless or that obedience earns God’s favor on its own terms. It describes his attitude and practice. Elsewhere in the same psalm he speaks of God’s mercy and grace, so this statement should be read as a grateful testimony about walking with God, not as a boast that he never failed.

The Context of Psalm 18:22

Psalm 18 is attributed to David and appears in the Psalter as a song he sang “on the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.” It is also found in nearly identical form in 2 Samuel 22. Its first words are a love song to God, and it moves through a vivid account of God rescuing the king from danger.

Verses 19 through 25 come right after David describes God bringing him into a “large place” and delivering him because God delighted in him. Verse 22 sits inside a short run of statements about rewards, righteousness, and clean hands. This setting shows that David is explaining why God acted for him: he had walked in God’s ways. Read this way, the verse is less a rule for earning favor and more a witness to a relationship in which God’s faithfulness and David’s loyalty met.

Key Phrases in Psalm 18:22

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

This verse describes God’s word as a lamp for the feet and a light for the path. It pairs naturally with David’s picture of God’s ordinances being kept in view, because both images treat Scripture as the guide that makes each step visible.

Joshua 1:8

This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.

(WEB)

God tells Joshua to keep the book of the law on his lips and meditate on it day and night. The command to keep God’s word constantly in mind echoes David’s testimony that he never put God’s statutes away.

A Short Prayer From Psalm 18:22

Lord, you have given us your ordinances and statutes as a steady guide for our lives. Help us keep them in view when we are tempted to set them aside for what seems easier or more urgent. Let your word be close enough to shape our choices, our words, and our rest. Where we have already drifted, bring us back to you with patience and with the mercy you have shown David. Thank you for being faithful even when we are not. Amen.
