This lesson teaches children that God forgives the wrongs we confess to him and that his love surrounds those who trust him. It works well for children ages 5 to 11, and the whole lesson takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
When we tell God what we did wrong, he forgives us, and that makes us truly happy. Hiding our mistakes only makes us feel heavy inside.
Memory Verse
Psalm 32:5
I acknowledged my sin to you. I didn’t hide my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

Have children cup their hands in front of their mouths as if whispering, then open their palms outward like letting a balloon go. Say “I confess, you forgive” as you do the motions, and repeat it together three times.
The Story: Psalm 32 for Kids
King David wrote this song after a hard time in his life. He had done something wrong, and he kept it secret for a long while. Every day he felt tired and sad, like his bones were growing weak inside him. He did not feel like singing at all.
David began to feel the weight of God’s hand on him. It was like a heavy blanket that would not lift off. His strength drained away, even in the hot summer sun. He knew he could not keep pretending everything was fine.
So David stopped hiding. He told God the truth about what he had done. He said simply, “I will confess my wrongs to the LORD.” Then something wonderful happened. God forgave him, and the heavy feeling was lifted away.
David was so happy about this that he wanted to share the good news with everyone. He wrote that God is like a safe hiding place, a shelter from the storms of life. God surrounds his people with songs of joy when they trust him.
In the end, David calls out to all the good and honest people. He tells them to be glad and to shout for joy because of God’s kindness. Even when trouble comes, God’s love is still bigger.
Read It Together
Psalm 32:1-2
1 Blessed is he whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man to whom the LORD doesn’t impute iniquity, in whose spirit there is no deceit.

Point out the word “blessed,” which means happy in a deep, lasting way. Ask children what kinds of things make them feel truly happy, and explain that God gives this happiness to people whose wrongs he has forgiven.
Psalm 32:7
You are my hiding place. You will preserve me from trouble. You will surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.
(WEB)
Show children the picture of a hiding place, like a fort or a tent, and explain that God protects us the way a safe place keeps us out of the rain. Let them name a place where they feel safe at home.
Psalm 32:11
Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, you righteous! Shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart!
(WEB)
Read this verse with a big smile and encourage the children to cheer along with you. Explain that God wants his people to feel joy, and that gladness is a good response to his faithfulness.
Talk About It
- How do you feel when you keep a secret about something wrong you did?
- What did David do when he finally told God the truth?
- Why do you think it made David feel lighter after he confessed?
- What is one thing that helps you feel safe when you are scared?
- What is a reason you have to be glad in the Lord today?
Activity Ideas
Heavy Heart Drawing
Give each child a sheet of paper and crayons. Ask them to draw a heavy rock or a dark cloud on one side and a bright sun on the other. Talk about how God’s forgiveness turns the heavy feeling into sunshine. Children can take their drawings home to share with family.
Hide and Be Found
Choose one child to hide a small toy somewhere in the room while the others close their eyes. When the toy is found, cheer loudly. Explain that God is our hiding place, and that he is always ready to welcome us when we come to him honestly. Repeat the game so everyone has a turn to hide.
Forgiveness Jar
Give each child a small jar or cup and a stack of paper slips. Invite them to write or draw one thing they are sorry for and fold it up. They can drop it in the jar as a reminder that they can always tell God the truth. Keep the jar in a safe place at home or in your classroom.
Teacher Notes
Psalm 32 shows that hiding sin brings real weariness, and that honest confession brings relief and joy. For adults, the psalm is a reminder that God’s forgiveness is freely given to those who turn to him, and that his steadfast love surrounds his people in every season. It is an invitation to stop pretending and trust God with the whole truth.
Avoid suggesting to children that God only forgives when they feel sorry enough, or that bad things happen only because of secret sin. Keep the focus on God’s kindness and the joy of being forgiven, rather than on fear or on telling children that every hardship is punishment.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank you for forgiving us when we tell you the truth. Help us not to hide our mistakes from you. Thank you that you are our safe place, and that you fill us with songs of joy. Help us to be glad in you every day. Amen.
