This lesson teaches children that God’s love is bigger than the sky and that He keeps us safe under His care. It suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short story, a memory action, and an activity.

Big Idea

God’s love is huge, and He takes care of everyone who trusts in Him, like a bird that hides its babies under its wings.

Memory Verse

Psalm 36:5

Your loving kindness, the LORD, is in the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.

(WEB)

Stretch both arms wide like the sky, then fold them in front of your chest like a hug. Say “God’s love is so big!” while you stretch, and “God keeps me close!” while you hug. Repeat it three times together so children can feel the words.

The Story: Psalm 36 for Kids

Long ago, a writer named David watched people who did not care about God. Some of them made plans to do bad things, even while they lay in bed at night. They believed they could do whatever they wanted and never be caught. David saw that they were not being wise, and that their hearts were not good.

David did not stay focused on those people for long. He looked up at the sky and remembered that God’s love reaches all the way to the heavens. God’s faithfulness is as big as the clouds and as strong as the tallest mountains. David knew that God is fair and good, and that He takes care of every person and every animal.

Then David talked to God in prayer. He said, “How precious is your love, God!” He knew that people who run to God find safety under His wings, the way a little chick hides under its mother when the sky turns dark. Those who trust God find they have plenty, like a family sitting down to a feast in a warm house.

David prayed one more thing. He asked God to keep showing His love to the people who know Him and to help the good-hearted people stay strong. He asked God to keep the proud and wicked people from pushing him away or causing him harm. David trusted that God would stop them.

The psalm ends with a picture of the wicked people who did harm. They have fallen down and cannot get back up. David was sure that God sees everything and that the people who plan evil will not win in the end.

Read It Together

Psalm 36:7

How precious is your loving kindness, God! The children of men take refuge under the shadow of your wings.

(WEB)

Point out the picture of God’s wings. Ask children to think about a time they felt safe with someone who loved them, and explain that God’s love is even safer than that.

Psalm 36:9

For with you is the spring of life. In your light shall we see light.

(WEB)

Show children the word “light” and explain that God is the source of life and understanding. Hold a flashlight or lamp and say that God’s light helps us see clearly.

Psalm 36:10

Oh continue your loving kindness to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart.

(WEB)

Point out that David asks God to keep loving those who know Him. Explain that knowing God means spending time with Him, reading His Word, and talking with Him each day.

Talk About It

  • What is the biggest thing you have ever seen, and how does God’s love compare to it?
  • When do you feel safe, and what does it feel like to be under God’s wings?
  • What did the people in the story do that was not wise, and how can we choose to be wise instead?
  • How can you show God’s love to someone at home or at school this week?
  • Why do you think God wants us to trust Him, even when we cannot see Him?

Activity Ideas

Wing Hug Picture

You will need paper, crayons, glue, and cotton balls or torn tissue paper. Have each child draw a big mother bird with wide wings on the paper. Then glue cotton balls around the edges to make soft feathers. As they work, talk about how the bird’s wings keep its babies safe, and how God’s wings keep us safe too.

Sky-High Follow the Leader

Clear a space in the room or outside. Have children walk around slowly, then stretch their arms up high like they are touching the sky. Call out “Mountains!” and have them stand tall, and “Deep waters!” and have them crouch low. End with everyone wrapping their arms around themselves while you say “God keeps us safe.”

Light Your Path at Home

You will need a small flashlight or a candle in a safe holder, and a card with the words “God is the light of life.” Send the child home with the card and ask them to show it to a family member at dinner. Encourage them to read the verse aloud and share one way they saw God’s love this week.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this psalm shows a clear contrast between people who ignore God and the steady, faithful love God shows to everyone. David’s words remind us that God’s character is constant, that He cares for all of creation, and that His protection is available to those who come to Him. Adults can read it as both a warning about pride and an invitation to rest in God’s care.

When teaching children, avoid making the wicked people in the story sound like they are beyond hope, or suggesting that bad things will happen to anyone who is struggling. Keep the focus on God’s love and safety, and remind children that God welcomes everyone who turns to Him.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you that your love reaches the sky and your faithfulness is bigger than the clouds. Help us to rest under your wings and to know that you keep us safe. Teach us to trust you each day and to shine your love to others. Amen.
