Psalm 48 is a song celebrating Mount Zion, the city of God, and the protection the LORD gives his people there. These questions are for small groups, Sunday classes, and anyone studying the chapter on their own. Each section moves from what the text says, to what it means, to how it shapes daily life, and a leader’s note follows every question so the session can run without outside preparation.

Psalm 48 at a Glance

The psalm opens with praise: the LORD is great and worthy of praise in his holy city. The writer then describes Zion’s beauty and security, and recounts how kings gathered against the city, saw something that frightened them, and fled. The middle verses rejoice in God’s steadfast love and righteous judgments, and invite the people to walk around the city and count its towers.

The final section turns from the city to God himself. The psalm closes by calling the LORD our God forever, the one who will guide his people even to the end of life. The structure moves from praise, to description, to testimony, and finally to trust.

Observation Questions

Start with the text itself. These questions ask the group to notice what the psalm actually says before anyone draws conclusions. Read the chapter aloud once, then invite answers from memory and from the printed text.

Psalm 48:1-3

1 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, in the city of our God, in his holy mountain. 2 Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the north sides, the city of the great King. 3 God has shown himself in her citadels as a refuge.

This opening section sets the theme of praise and security. Reading it first gives the group a shared sense of the psalm’s purpose before the questions begin.

Psalm 48:4-7

4 For, behold, the kings assembled themselves, they passed by together. 5 They saw it, then they were amazed. They were dismayed. They hurried away. 6 Trembling took hold of them there, pain, as of a woman in travail. 7 With the east wind, you break the ships of Tarshish.

Reading the account of the kings slowly helps the group feel the contrast between their fear and the city’s security. It makes the psalm’s logic easier to follow.

Psalm 48:8-10

8 As we have heard, so we have seen, in the city of the LORD of Armies, in the city of our God. God will establish it forever. Selah. 9 We have thought about your loving kindness, God, in the middle of your temple. 10 As is your name, God, so is your praise to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is full of righteousness.

These verses speak of testimony and of God’s steadfast love. Reading them aloud anchors the discussion of faith and remembrance in the psalm’s own words.

Psalm 48:12-14

12 Walk about Zion, and go around her. Number its towers. 13 Mark well her bulwarks. Consider her palaces, that you may tell it to the next generation. 14 For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even to death.

This closing passage calls the people to remember and to pass on their trust. Ending the reading here sends the group into the application questions with the psalm’s final note in mind.

Psalm 48:11

Let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice, Because of your judgments.

Reading this verse alone lets the group hear the call to joy directly. It works well as a pause point before moving to the next set of questions.

Memory Verse for Psalm 48

Psalm 48:14

For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even to death.

This verse ends the psalm with a clear promise of God’s guidance. Memorizing it gives members a lasting reminder that the LORD leads his people through every stage of life.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come before you as the great and holy God the psalmist praised. Thank you for being a refuge for your people and for showing yourself faithful in every generation. Help us to remember what you have done, to speak of your goodness to those who follow us, and to rest in your guidance even when the way is unclear. Shape our hearts to rejoice in your righteous judgments and to trust you with what we cannot see. Be with each person in this group this week, and draw us closer to you through your Word. Amen.
