In this lesson, children learn one simple truth: when we feel scared or overwhelmed, we can call on God, and he hears us and keeps us safe. This lesson is for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God hears me when I call to him, and he is a strong, safe place to run to when I am scared.

Memory Verse

Psalm 61:1

Hear my cry, God. Listen to my prayer.

(WEB)

Cup your hands together in front of your chest, like you are holding a little bird, then lift them up toward the ceiling as you say the words slowly. Each time you lift your hands, it reminds children that they are lifting their prayers up to God.

The Story: Psalm 61 for Kids

King David wrote this song a long time ago. He was far away from home, and he felt very tired and worried. His heart felt heavy, like a bag full of rocks. He did not know what to do, so he did the best thing he could think of. He prayed.

David called out to God from the far end of the land. He knew God was always listening, even when he was far away. He asked God to lift him up onto a high rock, where he would be safe from anything that wanted to hurt him. Think of climbing up a big stone to get away from a flood of water.

David remembered something important. God had always been his safe place, like a tall, strong tower that no enemy could knock down. David said he wanted to stay close to God forever. He said he wanted to rest under God’s wings, the way a little bird tucks under its mother to feel warm and safe.

Then David looked back at all the times God had kept his promises. God had heard his prayers before, and God had given him a home among people who loved God. David was so thankful that he wanted to sing. He decided he would sing praises to God every single day.

David also prayed for his king. He asked God to bless the king with a long and good life, and to keep him safe with God’s love and truth. Children can see that David trusted God to take care of everyone, not just himself.

When David was scared, he did not hide his feelings from God. He told God exactly how he felt, and then he trusted God to help him. That is what David wants us to remember.

Read It Together

Psalm 61:2

From the end of the earth, I will call to you, when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

(WEB)

Point out the words “from the end of the earth” and ask children where they would feel far away from home. Show them that David still called out to God even when he felt far away, because God can hear from anywhere.

Psalm 61:3-4

3 For you have been a refuge for me, a strong tower from the enemy. 4 I will dwell in your tent forever. I will take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah.

(WEB)

Show children the picture of a tower and a bird’s wings, and explain that these are ways of describing how safe God keeps us. Ask them to name a place where they feel safe, and then talk about how God is even safer.

Psalm 61:5

For you, God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

(WEB)

Point out that David says God has heard his vows, meaning the promises he made to God. Talk with children about a promise they made to someone and how it feels when a promise is kept.

Talk About It

  • What is something that makes you feel scared or worried sometimes?
  • What did David do when he felt overwhelmed?
  • Where is a place you feel safe, and how is God like that place?
  • Why do you think David wanted to sing praises to God every day?
  • What is one thing you can say to God the next time you feel scared?

Activity Ideas

Paper Tower Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a tall, strong tower with a flag on top, then draw a small bird or a person standing safely inside it. As they draw, talk about how God is a strong tower that keeps us safe. Let them write or draw one thing they want to tell God.

Rock Climb Game

Gather some pillows, cushions, or sturdy boxes and set them up as a “rock” in the middle of the room. Tell children that the floor is a flood of water and the pillows are the high rock God lifts us up to. Have them climb carefully onto the rock, one at a time, while you say “God is my safe place.” Keep the movement gentle and safe for everyone.

Take-Home Prayer Card

You will need an index card or a piece of cardstock, a marker, and a rubber band. On one side, have children write or draw a picture of something that scares them. On the other side, write “God hears me” in big letters. Encourage them to keep it in a pocket or on the nightstand and pray over it each night with their family.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Psalm 61 is a prayer of someone who feels far away and overwhelmed, yet still turns toward God. It shows that honest prayer is welcome, and that God is a refuge and a strong tower for anyone who runs to him. Many Christians have prayed these words in hospital rooms, during hard seasons, and in times of exile, trusting God’s faithfulness even when circumstances are hard.

With children, avoid overstating the idea that God will always remove every scary thing from their lives. The psalm teaches that God hears us and keeps us safe, not that we will never feel afraid. Help children understand that feeling scared is normal and that talking to God about it is the right response.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you for hearing us when we call to you. When we feel scared or far away, help us remember that you are our strong tower and our safe place. Keep us close under your wings, and help us sing your praises every day. Amen.
