This page gives you ready-to-use Bible study questions for Psalm 97, with a leader’s note under each one. It is written for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. Each set of questions moves from what the psalm says, to what it means, to how it shapes daily life.
Psalm 97 at a Glance
Psalm 97 opens with a declaration that the LORD reigns, and it calls the earth and the coastlands to rejoice. The psalmist then describes God’s coming in terms of cloud, darkness, fire, and lightning, images that show both his majesty and his holiness. Righteousness and justice are named as the foundation of his throne, so his power is never separated from his character.
The second half turns to the response of the nations and of Zion. Those who trust in idols are put to shame, while Zion and the daughters of Judah rejoice because of God’s judgments. The psalm closes by calling the righteous to love what is good, to find light and gladness, and to give thanks to God’s holy name.

Memory Verse for Psalm 97
A Closing Prayer for the Group
Father, we come before you as the one who reigns over all the earth. Thank you that righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne, and that we can trust your character even when the way ahead is dark. Teach us to rejoice in you as Zion did, and to give thanks to your holy name with honest hearts. Where we have set our hopes on things that cannot save, turn our eyes back to you. Help us to love what is good and to hate what is evil, and make us people who walk in the light you sow for the upright. Amen.
