Revelation 12 describes a woman clothed with the sun, a red dragon waiting to devour her child, a war in heaven, and the people who overcome by the blood of the Lamb. These questions are for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. Each set moves from what the text says, to what it means, to how it shapes daily faithfulness.

Revelation 12 at a Glance

The chapter opens with two great signs in heaven: a woman in labor and a dragon poised to devour her son. The child is caught up to God’s throne, and the woman flees into the wilderness, where she is nourished for a set period. Then war breaks out in heaven, Michael and his angels cast the dragon down to earth, and a loud voice celebrates the victory of God and the accuser’s defeat.

The second half turns to the earth. The dragon pursues the woman, but the earth helps her, and the chapter closes with the dragon going off to make war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God’s commandments and hold Jesus’ testimony.

Observation Questions

Use these at the start of the session to slow the group down and stick closely to the words on the page before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask each person to point to the verse they are drawing from.

Revelation 12:1-2

1 A great sign was seen in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. 2 She was with child. She cried out in pain, laboring to give birth.

Read these verses first so the group can picture the woman before any discussion begins. The image sets the emotional tone for the whole chapter and gives everyone a common scene to return to.

Revelation 12:7-9

7 There was war in the sky. Michael and his angels made war on the dragon. The dragon and his angels made war. 8 They didn’t prevail, neither was a place found for them any more in heaven. 9 The great dragon was thrown down, the old serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Reading the war in heaven aloud helps the group hear the sequence of the battle and the casting down of the dragon. It is useful before the interpretation questions, since many answers depend on these lines.

Revelation 12:10-11

10 I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, the power, and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ has come; for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night. 11 They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn’t love their life, even to death.

(WEB)

This is the heart of the chapter’s theology of victory. Reading it slowly gives the group space to notice that the triumph is attributed to the Lamb and to the testimony of the faithful.

Revelation 12:14

Two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, so that she might be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

(WEB)

The eagle’s wings and the wilderness refuge speak to God’s protective care in hard seasons. Reading this verse in the session invites the group to think about how God provides a way of escape rather than forcing people to face the dragon alone.

Revelation 12:17

The dragon grew angry with the woman, and went away to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep God’s commandments and hold Jesus’ testimony.

(WEB)

The chapter closes with the dragon’s anger toward the faithful. Reading this last helps the group leave the session with a clear picture of who the chapter is written to encourage and how they are identified.

Memory Verse for Revelation 12

Revelation 12:11

They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn’t love their life, even to death.

(WEB)

This verse gathers the chapter’s central promise into one line: victory through the Lamb’s blood and faithful witness, held even when the cost is high. It is short enough to memorize and deep enough to return to in times of pressure.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you as people who have heard the story of a woman in labor, a dragon with his eyes on her child, and a heaven that rejoices when the accuser is thrown down. Thank you that the victory belongs to the Lamb, and that you have prepared a place of provision for your people in every wilderness. Help us to hold our testimony faithfully and to love you more than our own comfort or safety. Where we feel accused, remind us of the voice in heaven that announces your salvation and your kingdom. Keep us steady in the everyday obedience that follows Jesus, and let this group be a place where that faithfulness is strengthened. Amen.
