This lesson teaches children that God protects His people, even when the enemy is strong and scary. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach, including the activity.

Big Idea

God keeps His people safe, and the enemy can never win against Him. Even when things look frightening, God is still in charge, and He takes care of the ones who belong to Him.

Memory Verse

Revelation 12:11

They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn’t love their life, even to death.

Hold both fists up in front of your chest, then slowly open your hands and lift them high as you say the verse together. Lifting your hands shows the children that God’s people win through the Lamb, and their brave faith is their victory.

The Story: Revelation 12 for Kids

John saw a big sign in the sky. A woman was there, shining bright like the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was about to have a baby, and she cried out because the pain was so strong.

Then John saw another sign. A great red dragon appeared, with seven heads and ten horns. The dragon wanted to hurt the baby as soon as it was born. The baby was a son, and God took him up to His throne, so the dragon could not touch him.

The woman ran away into the wilderness, and God had a safe place ready for her. God took care of her there for a long time. The dragon was very angry about this, and a great war broke out in the sky. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels.

The dragon lost the fight. He was thrown down to the earth, along with his angels. A loud voice in heaven shouted, “Now the salvation and power of our God have come!” The voice was glad, because the enemy who had accused God’s people was gone.

The dragon was still angry, so he chased the woman. But God gave her two great eagle wings to fly to her safe place. When the dragon poured out a river of water after her, the earth opened up and swallowed the river. God protected her again.

Even then, the dragon was not finished. He went off to make war against the rest of her children, the people who keep God’s commands and hold on to Jesus. The story shows that the enemy is strong, but God is stronger.

Read It Together

Revelation 12:1

A great sign was seen in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

(WEB)

Point out the bright woman in the sky and ask the children what it would feel like to see something so beautiful. Explain that this picture shows God’s people, shining with His light even in a hard world.

Revelation 12:6

The woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that there they may nourish her one thousand two hundred sixty days.

(WEB)

Show the children that God prepared a special place for the woman. Remind them that God always has a safe place ready for His people when they need it.

Revelation 12:14

Two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, so that she might be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

(WEB)

Point out the two eagle wings that helped the woman escape. Tell the children that God gives His people the help they need to get through hard times.

Talk About It

  • What did the woman in the sky look like, and why do you think John described her so brightly?
  • When the dragon chased the woman, how do you think she felt, and what helped her keep going?
  • Who fought the dragon in heaven, and what does that tell us about God’s protection?
  • What are some things that make you feel scared, and how can you remember that God is with you?
  • How can we show our faith in Jesus when life feels hard, like the people in this story?

Activity Ideas

Draw the Sky Scene

Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons or markers, and a cotton ball. Have them draw the woman shining with the sun and moon under her feet, then glue cotton balls on the sky for clouds. Let them draw the dragon too, but encourage them to make the woman and her crown of stars the brightest part of the picture.

Eagle Wings Race

Ask children to stretch their arms out like eagle wings and run slowly around the room, pretending to fly to a safe place. Call out “Dragon!” now and then, and have them flap their wings faster. End by having everyone stop in one safe corner together, showing how God brings His people to safety.

Take-Home Star Crown

Cut strips of cardstock long enough to fit around a child’s head, and let them decorate them with twelve star stickers or drawn stars. Tape the strips into crowns. Ask the child to wear the crown at home and tell one family member that God keeps His people safe.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Revelation 12 pictures the spiritual battle between God and the enemy, who is named as the dragon and Satan. The chapter reassures believers that Satan has been defeated, that God protects His people, and that faithful witness through the Lamb’s blood brings victory. Its imagery is symbolic and draws on earlier Scripture, so the central message is God’s sovereignty and faithfulness.

With children, avoid overstating the dragon’s details or making the chapter a source of fear. Keep the focus on God’s protection and the safety of His people, rather than on the monsters or the battle itself. Children should leave feeling secure, not anxious about the end of the world.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for keeping us safe in Your hands. When we feel scared, help us remember that You are stronger than anything that tries to hurt us. Help us stay close to You and trust You every day. Amen.
