This lesson teaches children that God is in charge of everything, even the scary parts of the Bible, and that He keeps every promise He makes. It is best for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the activities, and the closing prayer.

Big Idea

God is stronger than every enemy, and in the end He makes everything right. Those who belong to Jesus can trust Him, even when things seem frightening.

Memory Verse

Revelation 20:6

Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with him one thousand years.

Hold both hands up like a crown, then fold them gently over your heart. Say the words slowly while you do it, so children connect the picture of God’s people reigning with Him to a feeling of safety and peace.

The Story: Revelation 20 for Kids

John, a follower of Jesus, was living on a rocky island called Patmos. In his dream, he saw a powerful angel come down from heaven. The angel held a huge key and a long, strong chain, and he meant business.

The angel grabbed the dragon, which is another name for the devil, and tied him up. He locked the dragon in a deep pit and shut the door tight. The angel said that the dragon could not trick the nations anymore for a very long time.

John then saw thrones, and people sitting on them with a job to do. He saw the faithful followers of Jesus, the ones who stayed loyal even when it cost them a lot. They were alive again and reigning with Christ, and John said this was the first resurrection.

Later, the devil was let out for a short time and tried to trick many people again. But fire came down from heaven and stopped him right away. The devil was thrown into the lake of fire, where he could never hurt anyone again.

Then John saw a great white throne with God sitting on it. Everyone who had ever lived stood before Him, and books were opened. Each person was judged, and anyone whose name was in the book of life was welcomed in.

Read It Together

Revelation 20:1-2

1 I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 He seized the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole inhabited earth, and bound him for a thousand years…

(WEB)

Point out that the angel is sent by God, and that the devil is bound by God’s power. Remind children that no enemy is stronger than the Lord, and that He is always in control of what happens.

Revelation 20:11

I saw a great white throne, and him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. There was found no place for them.

(WEB)

Help children picture a throne as a seat of royal authority. Explain that the great throne shows that God is the true King, and that He is the one who decides how the story ends.

Revelation 20:15

If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.

(WEB)

Show the phrase “book of life” and explain that God keeps a record of everyone who trusts in Jesus. Make clear that this book is a sign of God’s love and promise, not something to fear for those who belong to Him.

Talk About It

  • What do you think John felt when he saw the angel come down from heaven?
  • Why is it good to know that God is stronger than the devil?
  • What does it mean that God’s people will reign with Jesus?
  • How can you show that you trust God when something feels scary?
  • Who are some people in your life who help you remember that God is good?

Activity Ideas

Paper Crown Craft

You will need construction paper, crayons or markers, tape, and scissors. Measure a strip of paper that fits around each child’s head, then let them decorate it with gold and bright colors. Tape the ends together and talk about how God gives His people a crown of life, as a reminder that He honors those who stay faithful.

Key and Chain Race

You will need a few paper towel tubes, string, and a small toy or ball. Let children take turns carrying the “key” and “chain” across the room while balancing a light object on the tube. Afterward, talk about how the angel was strong and careful, and how God is always able to keep His promises.

Book of Life Bookmark

You will need cardstock, stickers, a hole punch, and a piece of yarn or ribbon. Let each child write their name on the cardstock and decorate it with stickers. Punch a hole at the top, tie on the yarn, and encourage them to put it in their Bible at home as a reminder that their name is written in God’s book of life.

Teacher Notes

Revelation 20 is a vision of God’s final victory over evil. For adults, it teaches that God is sovereign over history, that evil will not have the last word, and that those who trust Christ are secure in Him. The chapter is full of symbolic imagery, so it helps to focus on the big picture of God’s justice and faithfulness rather than trying to map every detail.

With children, avoid overstating the frightening parts of the chapter, such as the lake of fire and the final judgment. Keep the emphasis on God’s power, His love for His people, and the hope of being with Him forever, so that children feel secure rather than afraid.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Lord, thank You that You are stronger than anything that scares us. Help us trust You when we feel small, and remind us that You keep every promise You make. We love You and want to belong to You forever. Amen.
