Revelation 21:23 means that in the new creation, God himself will be the light of his people, so the city will not need the sun or moon. The reason is that God’s glory fills it and the Lamb, Jesus, is its lamp. John, the author of Revelation, wrote this as part of his vision of the New Jerusalem, the holy city coming down out of heaven to dwell with humanity. He wrote it to Christians in the churches of Asia Minor who were facing pressure and hardship, offering them a picture of final hope.

The city has no need for the sun, neither of the moon, to shine, for the very glory of God illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb.

What Revelation 21:23 Means

The verse begins by saying the city has no need for the sun or the moon. In ancient thinking, these lights were the great sources of day and night, and they organized life on earth. John is saying that in the coming city those lights become unnecessary, because something greater has taken their place.

That greater thing is “the very glory of God.” Glory in Scripture refers to the weight, brightness and presence of God. Here it is described as shining on the city like light itself. The verse then adds that the Lamb is the city’s lamp. The Lamb is a picture of Jesus, who gave himself as a sacrifice, and now he is the one through whom the presence of God is seen and enjoyed.

The verse does not describe the exact mechanics of this light or explain every detail of the city’s appearance. It promises that the people of God will live in constant, clear, life-giving light, and that this light comes from God and the Lamb rather than from anything that will one day fade.

The Context of Revelation 21:23

Revelation was written by John, traditionally identified as the apostle, while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It was addressed to seven churches in the province of Asia, many of which were facing persecution, poverty, and pressure to compromise their faith. The book uses dramatic symbols and visions to show that God is ultimately in control and will win the final victory over evil.

Just before verse 23, John describes the city’s walls, gates and streets, all made of precious stones and gold. Verse 22 says there is no temple in the city, because God and the Lamb are themselves its temple. Verse 24 continues the light theme, saying the nations will walk by its light. Seeing verse 23 within this flow shows that the absence of a sun and the presence of divine light are part of a larger picture of God dwelling fully with his people, with no barrier between them.

Key Phrases in Revelation 21:23

John 1:4-5

4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it.

John’s Gospel also describes Jesus as the light of humanity, shining in darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Reading this alongside Revelation 21:23 shows that the light promised for the future is the same light that is already breaking into the world through Christ.

Isaiah 60:19-20

19 The sun will be no more your light by day; nor will the brightness of the moon give light to you, but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. 20 Your sun will not go down any more, nor will your moon withdraw itself; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning will end.

Isaiah describes a future Jerusalem where the Lord himself becomes an everlasting light, and the days of mourning come to an end. This older prophecy helps explain why John’s vision of God as the city’s light carries such weight, since it echoes a promise that God’s people had long been waiting to see fulfilled.

A Short Prayer From Revelation 21:23

Lord God, you are the light that never fades, and you dwell with your people in glory. Thank you that the Lamb who gave himself for us is also the lamp that lights the way home. When my days feel dim and I cannot see the path ahead, remind me that your presence is enough. Shine your light on my heart today, and help me walk in it with trust and gratitude. Amen.
