This lesson teaches children that God is making everything new, and that the city he prepares has light, healing, and a place for everyone who trusts him. It suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the activity, and prayer.

Big Idea

God is making everything new, and in his city there is no night, no sadness, and no curse. Because Jesus is coming back, we can trust him and wait for his good home.

Memory Verse

Revelation 22:5

There will be no night, and they need no lamp light; for the Lord God will illuminate them. They will reign forever and ever.

(WEB)

Cup both hands together like a little lamp and hold them up high. Then slowly open them wide, as if the light is filling the whole room. Say “God will be our light” while you do the motion.

The Story: Revelation 22 for Kids

Near the end of the Bible, the apostle John was given a special vision by God. In it, an angel showed him a beautiful river. The water was clear like crystal, and it flowed from the throne of God and of the Lamb, who is Jesus. Children, picture a river so clean you could see every pebble at the bottom.

Beside the river grew a tree of life. It had twelve kinds of fruit, and it made fresh fruit every month. Its leaves were there to bring healing to the nations. John saw that God’s people would live there with him, and nothing bad would ever happen again.

John saw something else that made him very happy. God’s servants would see his face, and his name would be written on their foreheads. There would be no night at all, because God himself would give them all the light they needed. They would be with him forever.

John was so amazed that he fell down to worship. The angel gently stopped him and said, “Worship God, not me. I am just a servant like you.” Then Jesus spoke, saying, “I am coming soon, and I will bring my reward with me.” Jesus called himself the Alpha and the Omega, which means he is the beginning and the end of everything.

Jesus also invited everyone who was thirsty to come and take the water of life freely. The Spirit and the bride, which is the church, said, “Come!” God wants everyone to come to him.

Read It Together

Revelation 22:1-2

1 He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, 2 in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

(WEB)

Point out the clear river and the tree whose leaves bring healing. Ask children what they think it would feel like to stand by water that clean and sit under a tree that feeds everyone. Remind them that God makes beautiful, safe places for his people.

Revelation 22:3-4

3 There will be no curse any more. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

(WEB)

Show children that there will be no curse anymore, and that God’s servants will see his face. Help them notice how close God wants to be to his people. Say that the best part is that we will be with him.

Revelation 22:20

He who testifies these things says, “Yes, I come quickly.” Amen! Yes, come, Lord Jesus.

(WEB)

Point out that Jesus says “Yes, I come quickly,” and that the people answer “Amen” and “Come, Lord Jesus.” Explain that these words are a prayer full of hope. Let children practice saying “Come, Lord Jesus” together in a happy voice.

Talk About It

  • What do you think it will feel like to live where there is no night and no sadness?
  • Why do you think the tree of life has leaves that help people get well?
  • How can you show Jesus that you are ready for him to come back?
  • What is one thing you are thirsty for, and how can God’s water of life fill that need?
  • Who is someone you want to invite to come to God’s home with you?

Activity Ideas

Paint a River and Tree Picture

You will need paper, blue and green paint or crayons, a brown marker, and some glue. Draw a wavy blue river across the bottom of the paper, then draw a tree with green leaves beside it. Let children add small fruits to the branches. Talk about how God’s city has a river and a tree that give life.

Lamp Light Race

You will need a flashlight or a small lamp, and a space where children can run safely. Turn off the room lights and let children take turns walking to a spot while holding the light. Then say that in God’s city there is no night, because God is the light. Cheer each time someone finishes.

Take-Home Crown of Light

You will need strips of paper, markers, tape, and small sticky notes. Have each child write “God is our light” on a strip, then tape it into a crown or bracelet. Let them take it home and wear it during the week. Encourage them to tell a family member what the words mean.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Revelation 22 closes the whole Bible with a picture of God’s restored creation, where his presence fills the city and his people live with him in joy and light. The chapter also invites every reader to trust Jesus and to pray for his return. It is a passage of hope, meant to encourage faithful living while we wait.

With children, avoid overstating the symbolic details of the river, the tree, and the Alpha and Omega, or turning the chapter into a chart of future events. Keep the focus on the main truth: God is making all things new, and he invites everyone to come to him.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you that you are making everything new and that you are our light. We are thirsty for your love, so we ask you to fill us with your water of life. Help us wait for Jesus with hope, and help us invite our friends to come to you. Amen.
