Revelation 3:22 is a closing call to pay attention. Jesus is saying that anyone with spiritual ears should listen carefully to what the Holy Spirit is saying to the churches. The verse ends the message to the church in Laodicea and, by extension, every letter in the opening chapters of Revelation.

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.”

What Revelation 3:22 Means

The phrase “he who has an ear” refers to a person who is willing to hear and take in a message, not merely to someone with working hearing. Jesus uses the same expression in the letters to the other churches, which shows that the call is meant for everyone who belongs to Christ. The words “let him hear” are an invitation to actually respond, not just to note what was said.

The verse specifies that what must be heard is “what the Spirit says to the assemblies.” The message is not presented as a private whisper for a select few. It is spoken to the gathered community of believers. The verse does not promise that every listener will understand every detail of Revelation, nor does it guarantee a particular outcome. It does affirm that God speaks, that his speaking is meant to be received, and that the church is accountable for listening well.

The Context of Revelation 3:22

Revelation was written by John, who identifies himself as being on the island of Patmos when he received his visions (Revelation 1:9). It was addressed to seven real congregations in the Roman province of Asia, including Laodicea. Those believers lived under economic pressure, social suspicion, and in some cases outright persecution, so the letters speak directly to faithfulness in difficult circumstances.

Just before verse 22, Jesus says that he stands at the door and knocks, and that those who open the door will share a meal with him. Verse 21 then promises that the one who overcomes will sit with Christ on his throne. Read this way, verse 22 is the hinge between a personal invitation and a public summons. The call to hear is tied to the promise of close fellowship with Jesus and to the hope of ultimate victory.

Key Phrases in Revelation 3:22

John 10:27

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

(WEB)

In this verse Jesus says that his sheep hear his voice and follow him. It deepens the idea in Revelation 3:22 by showing that hearing God is a mark of belonging to him. The call to listen in Revelation becomes a description of how a true disciple lives.

James 1:22

But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

(WEB)

James warns readers against hearing the word without doing it. This passage shows that the command to hear in Revelation is not satisfied by attention alone. Responsive obedience is the fruit of genuine listening.

A Short Prayer From Revelation 3:22

Lord Jesus, you know how easily my heart grows distracted and how quickly I trust my own opinions. Open my ears to hear what your Spirit is saying to your people. Where I have grown comfortable or proud, speak clearly and gently, and give me the courage to respond. Help me to listen not only with my mind but with a willing and obedient heart. Shape my life by your word, and let me walk more closely with you each day. Amen.
